Rams Resume NCAAs, Meet Favored Gators The Fort Collins Coloradoan Feature Story
Dec. 12, 2003
By Kelly Lyell GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Colorado State University's volleyball team is ranked No. 12 in the nation and riding a school-record 23-match winning streak. The Rams (30-4) haven't lost since Sept. 19. Yet, they're the underdogs in the NCAA Tournament's four-team Florida Regional. "We have nothing to lose. We're just out here to prove where we are and that we're a top team," junior outside hitter Becky Sarauer said Thursday night after the Rams' 90-minute workout at the O'Connell Center, where CSU will play third-ranked Florida (33-1) at 5:30 p.m. today in a regional semifinal. It's a new mindset for the Rams, who rolled through the Mountain West Conference regular season with a 14-0 record, then won the conference tournament and swept George Mason and then-No. 25 Maryland last weekend in first- and second-round NCAA matches. But it's real. CSU's opponent tonight, Florida, has won 33 matches in a row since dropping its season-opener to top-ranked and unbeaten Southern California in the State Farm Classic in Honolulu. The Gators, who are in the regional semifinals for the 13th consecutive season, haven't lost a game since their second match of the season, when they beat Kansas State in four.
