Knopf and Santos Earn AVCA All-America Honors Angela Knopf claims first-team honors; Soraya Santos second-team.
Dec. 12, 2001 FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Colorado State University Rams placed two on the AVCA All-America teams for the second straight season, the American Volleyball Coaches Association announced today. Senior middle blocker Angela Knopf earns her second consecutive First Team award, while senior right-side hitter Soraya Santos was honored on the Second Team. Colorado State was one of seven institutions (Nebraska, Long Beach State, Arizona, Florida, Stanford, Wisconsin) that had more than one player named to the two teams, with Nebraska bringing home the most honors with four. Knopf, a 6-1 middle blocker from Troutdale, Oregon, led the nation in hitting percentage through most of the season and ranked among the nation's leaders in blocks. She was named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year for the second straight time, as well as being named to the AVCA First Team. Knopf becomes the first player in school history to be named to the First Team more than once and only the second Ram to be honored multiple times by the committee. Santos, a 6-1 right-side hitter from Vitoria, Brazil, finished the year ranked third in the conference in hitting percentage at .350 and ranked among the leaders in kills, aces, digs and points per game. This is her first AVCA honoree, but she was a First Team All-American her sophomore season at the College of Southern Idaho and was an honorable mention All-American in her first year at the junior college. Santos becomes the seventh All-American in Colorado State history.
The Rams finished the season at 29-4 after dropping a four-game match to Nebraska in the Regional Semifinals.
