2005 Volleyball Season Concludes in NCAA Tournament Colorado State and Utah lose second round matches; No. 22 BYU falls in the first round
Dec. 4, 2005 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - MWC Tournament champion Utah and Colorado State fell in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Saturday night, concluding the 2005 MWC Volleyball season. No. 22 BYU lost its first round match to Pepperdine last Friday night. The Utes (23-9, 11-5 MWC) opened tournament play with a 3-0 win (30-10, 30-22, 30-20) over Loyola Marymount Friday night in Salt Lake City, before falling to No. 4 seed and sixth-ranked Arizona, 3-1 (28-30, 26-30, 30-28, 27-30), on Saturday. CSU (21-9, 12-4 MWC) defeated in-state rival Colorado in four games (26-30, 30-24, 30-19, 30-27) to advance. In second round play, the third-seeded and No. 2 ranked Washington Huskies swept the Rams (21-30, 25-30, 18-30). The 22nd-ranked Cougars (25-4, 14-2 MWC), fell to Pepperdine, 3-1, in first round action in Los Angeles, Calif., last Friday night. The 2005 season marked the fifth time since the inception of the conference that at least three teams competed in the NCAA Tournament. A league-best four teams (BYU, Colorado State, San Diego State and Utah) saw action in the 2001 tournament.
