COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - In the first four years of the league's existence, four teams (BYU, Colorado State, San Diego State, Utah) have earned invitations to the NCAA Tournament with three advancing to the Sweet 16. BYU has made it to the NCAAs 21 of the past 23 years including this year's bid. Utah has six straight NCAA appearances, while CSU will make its ninth straight appearance this season. SDSU has made four NCAA appearances in the last 10 years. Overall, the MWC has a 14-12 record in NCAA Tournaments since the league was formed in 1999, including an 8-4 mark in first round NCAA Tournament matches. BYU (23-8) vs. New Mexico State (30-4) BYU leads the all-time series 27-5. The teams last met Sept. 2, 1995 in Pullman, Wash., and the Cougars edged the Aggies 3-2. NMSU is making its first trip to the NCAA Tournament, while BYU is making its 21st NCAA appearance. The Cougars are 26-20 all-time in NCAA Tournaments. NMSU is on a 24-match win streak and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after winning the Sun Belt Conference Championship. BYU was an at-large selection after finishing third in the MWC. The winner of the BYU vs. NMSU match will face the winner of the Idaho vs. Hawai`i match in the second round. BYU is 5-13 all-time vs. Hawai`i and 2-0 vs. Idaho. Friday, Dec. 5
No. 14 seed Colorado State (28-4) vs. George Mason (16-14) Colorado State and George Mason have met only once before and the Rams won that match 3-0 at Moby Arena in 1995. The Patriots are making their second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament after winning back-to-back Colonial Athletic Association tournament championships. The Rams completed a 17-0 run this season through MWC opponents, posting a 14-0 mark in conference play and a 3-0 mark in the conference tournament, earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament along the way. CSU also enters the NCAA Tournament with a school record 21 straight victories. This is the ninth straight and 15th overall trip to the NCAA Tournament for Colorado State and the Rams are 13-14 all-time. The winner of the CSU vs. George Mason match will play the winner of host Maryland and American in the second round. CSU is 1-0 all-time vs. American and 2-0 vs. Maryland.
Utah (21-8) vs. Santa Clara (20-10)
Santa Clara leads the all-time series 3-1. The teams last met Sept. 21, 1996 in Logan, Utah, with the Utes posting a 3-2 victory. Both Utah and the 13th-ranked Broncos are making a sixth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Utes have a record of 5-5 in the NCAA Tournament. Utah, 12-2 in the MWC, and Santa Clara, 11-3 in the West Coast Conference, were at-large selections as both teams finished second in their respective conference regular season race. The winner of the Utah vs. SCU match will face the winner of No. 12 seed and host Washington vs. Northwestern in the second round. Utah is 5-3 all-time vs. Washington and would meet Northwestern for the first time.
