MWC Volleyball Player of the Week Utah's Shelly Sommerfeldt honored
Nov. 28, 2005 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Utah outside hitter Shelly Sommerfeldt earned Mountain West Conference Volleyball Player of the Week honors, marking her second weekly award of the season and her career. A 6-1 senior from Orem, Utah (Orem HS), Sommerfeldt led the No. 3 seed Utes to their third Mountain West Conference Championship last week after victories over Wyoming, Colorado State and top-seeded and 21st-ranked BYU. She recorded 11 kills in 27 attempts for a .370 hitting efficiency vs. the Cowgirls in the quarterfinal round of tournament play and posted a team-high 13 kills vs. the Rams in the semifinals. In the championship match vs. the Cougars, Sommerfeldt recorded 17 kills, with nine digs and four total blocks. For the week, Sommerfeldt averaged 4.10 kills, 2.30 digs, 1.30 blocks, 0.50 assists and 0.40 service aces per game, while hitting .260 (41-14-104) in the three matches and was named MWC Tournament Most Valuable Player.
