Delavane Diaz Named a Rhodes Scholar
The Falcon volleyball senior is the 33rd cadet to earn this distinction.
Nov. 24, 2003 USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - It was announced that Air Force volleyball senior Delavane Diaz was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship on Saturday, Nov. 22. The Tampa, Fla., native is one of 32 U.S. citizens who will take post-graduate degree courses at the University of Oxford, in Oxford, England. Diaz, who was also a CoSIDA Academic All-District Team member and Marshall Scholarship finalist, excels both academically and athletically. The former Wing Commander posts a 3.80 GPA in Astronautical Engineering, all while leading both the team and Mountain West Conference in kills per game with a 4.98 average. Diaz was named a state finalist following interviews in Miami on Wednesday, Nov. 19, and continued the process on Friday, Nov. 21, in Atlanta, Ga., at the regional interviews. In between the grueling interview process, Diaz led the Falcons in the MWC Volleyball Tournament with 11 kills against No. 6 BYU on Thursday, Nov. 20. The Rhodes Scholarships are the oldest international fellowships, bringing the best students from around the world to study at the University of Oxford. They began in 1902, with the first American Scholars elected in 1904. Rhodes Scholars from America are chosen through a process by which regional selection committees choose 32 scholars each year from among the students nominated by selection committees in each of the fifty states. Rhodes Scholars are selected for two years of study at the University of Oxford. All educational costs, such as tuition and labratory fees, are paid on the Rhodes Scholar recipient's behalf by the Rhodes Trustees. Each Scholar also recieves an allowance to meet expenses during term and vacation time, as well as the cost of travel to and from Oxford.
Diaz is the 33rd cadet from the Air Force Academy to earn the distinction of Rhodes Scholar.
