Puikkonen Named Mountain West Conference Volleyball Player of the Week Junior middle blocker led BYU to McLeodUSA Mountain West Conference Volleyball Championship.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Junior middle blocker Nina Puikkonen (pronounced PWEEKanen) from BYU was named the Mountain West Conference Volleyball Player of the Week, marking the third time this season and fifth time overall she has earned the award. A native of Murray, Utah, Puikkonen was named Most Valuable Player at the McLeodUSA Mountain West Conference Volleyball Championship last weekend after leading the Cougars to the tournament title. Puikkonen totaled a MWC Championship record 13 blocks along with 14 kills in a four-game victory over Wyoming (15-6, 15-6, 7-15, 15-7) in the first round Thursday. She notched her second triple-double of the season with 24 kills, 14 digs and 13 blocks in a four-game semifinal win over No. 19 Utah (16-14, 8-15, 15-8, 15-8) Friday. In the championship victory vs. No. 4 Colorado State (15-11, 8-15, 15-7, 9-15, 15-8), Puikkonen recorded a double-double with 15 kills and 12 digs as the Cougars won their first match in Fort Collins since 1995. She also had eight blocks and two aces in the win. For the week, Puikkonen hit .339 (53k-16e-109a) and averaged 2.62 blocks and 4.08 kills per game. Last year¹s MWC Player of the Year, Puikkonen ranks third on the BYU all-time block list and seventh on the Cougars all-time kill chart.
