FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Mountain West Conference today announced the 2004 Mountain West Volleyball All-Conference team at the pre-championship banquet held at the Fort Collins Country Club. Colorado State, which shared the 2004 regular season title, had five players named to the all-conference team, including senior setter Melissa Courtney, who was named both the Mountain West Player and Setter of the Year.

Courtney ranks among the top 10 in the nation and tops in the Mountain West in assists per game and the Rams led the league and rank among the top 10 in the nation in hitting percentage. This is the second year in a row Courtney has been Player of the Year, as last season she shared the honor with Utah's Kim Turner. It is also the third year in a row she has been named all-conference and the second straight season as setter of the year.

Earning all-conference honors for the third straight time is senior middle blocker Katie Jo Shirley-Cahoon, while junior outside hitter Tess Rogers earns all-conference for the second straight season and as a freshman in 2002, she was honored as the league's freshman of the year. Senior middle blocker Bri Frech and junior right-side hitter Dre Downs earn all-conference for the first time. Cahoon led the Mountain West in hitting percentage for the third straight season, while Downs ranked fifth. Frech led the league in aces and ranked among the top 10 in hitting percentage and blocks. Rogers ended the year second in kills per game, and was 11th in hitting percentage.

Utah's Lyndsey Henderson, Kelsie Kartchner and Shelly Sommerfeldt, BYU's Lindsey Metcalf, Lauren Richards and Lyndsy Hartsock and UNLV's Nicki King round out the 12 person team, while Utah's Connie Dangerfield was named the libero of the year and Wyoming's Rachel Smith and UNLV's Maria Aladjova were named co-freshman of the year.

Colorado State begins the Mountain West Conference Championship tomorrow as the two-seed and will face seventh-seeded New Mexico in the opening round at 7:00 p.m.
