Conference Race Will Come Down To Final Regular-season Match
Entering the final week of play, the inaugural Mountain West Conference regular-season title remains undecided as do the seeds for the conference championship. This past week, Colorado State pulled even with BYU for first place. CSU posted 3-1 wins over both UNLV and San Diego State, while BYU swept Utah in its only action. UNLV earned its second league win of the season at Wyoming to pull within a game of the two teams currently tied for sixth place. Wyoming pulled even with San Diego State in sixth place by posting a win over the Aztecs. New Mexico climbed a notch in the standings for the second straight week. The Lobos enter the final week in fifth place after defeating fourth-place Air Force in both teams’ only match of the week.

A full slate of conference action is in store during the final week. Each team plays on both Friday and Saturday. Fighting for the inaugural league title with just one loss each, BYU and CSU are scheduled to meet on the final day of the regular season Sat., Nov. 20. Prior to that, CSU must play at Utah while BYU plays host to Wyoming on Friday. Currently in third place, Utah could still claim a No. 2 seed with a win over CSU and a win by BYU over the Rams. The showdowns among the fourth through eighth place teams will also have significance in the tournament seedings. Just three games separate the fourth from eighth place teams. Fifth-place New Mexico and fourth-place Air Force face the same two teams over the weekend in sixth-place San Diego State and eighth-place UNLV.

Wyoming’s Friehauf Earns Her Second Mountain West Conference Volleyball Player of the Week Honor
Junior middle blocker Melody Friehauf from the University of Wyoming is this week’s Mountain West Conference Volleyball Player of the Week. Friehauf helped lead the Cowgirls to a split in this week’s conference matches as Wyoming defeated San Diego State, then lost to UNLV. Wyoming currently owns a 9-18 overall record and is tied with SDSU in sixth place in the league standings with a 3-9 conference mark.

For the week, Friehauf hit .484 and averaged 4.25 kills and 1.75 blocks per game. During Friday’s four-game win over San Diego State, she hit .517 with 16 kills and just one error in 29 attempts, and contributed seven blocks. In Saturday’s four-game loss to UNLV, Friehauf totaled 18 kills and just two errors in 35 attempts for a .457 attack percentage. She also notched her third double-figure blocking match with nine assisted and one solo vs. UNLV. Friehauf owns 19 double-figure kill outings this season, including the last seven matches in a row.

A native of Windsor, Colo., Friehauf currently ranks second in the conference in overall hitting percentage (.371) and blocks per game average (1.39). She also stands sixth in the conference in kills per game (3.88). With a team-high 372 kills this season, Friehauf is closing in on the prestigious 1,000 mark for her career. She currently stands seventh on the Wyoming all-time list with 955 career kills. Her team-best 133 total blocks this season brings her career total in that category to 436, a mark which stands second on the Wyoming all-time chart.

This is the second player of the week honor for Friehauf this season and in her career, making her the third player to claim the league’s honor twice this year. She also earned the honor on Sept. 27 after leading the Cowgirls in a split during non-conference play. Team Notes:

Air Force Falcons (17-9, 5-7 MWC)
Currently fourth in the league standings, the Falcons suffered a four-game loss at New Mexico … Brooke Effland (Sr., OH) notched her fourth 20-plus kill outing and registered a double-double with 21 kills and 13 digs in the loss … Earlier, Effland became only the 10th player in Air Force history, and the first since the program moved to the Division I level in 1996, to reach the prestigious 1,000 career kill milestone on Nov. 5 … Effland enters the final week of the regular-season with 1,045 … Summer Koons (Sr., MB) drilled 19 kills and added four blocks vs. UNM … Tracey Wilkerson (Sr., OH) just missed another entry on the 20-dig list with 19 at UNM … The Falcons continue to have individuals at the top of two conference statistical categories, as Tharommony In (Sr., S) leads the league in service aces (0.47) per game and Wilkerson tops the digs list with a 3.72 per game average … Shaylor Billings (Jr., MB) is one of only three MWC players to register a triple-double this season (15 kills, 12 digs and 11 blocks vs. CSU) … Historically, AFA entered the season with just two wins ever over Mountain West Conference opponents, yet they have totaled five already this season … This week, Air Force plays at UNLV and San Diego State.

BYU Cougars (22-3, 11-1 MWC)
The Cougars positioned themselves to play for the regular-season conference title against CSU in the final match on the schedule by defeating third-place Utah last week … With Friday’s sweep of Utah, BYU has now won 11 of its 12 conference matches in the minimum three games, however its only loss was also a sweep (by CSU) … The Cougars have won their last eight matches and their last 17 straight games … As a team, BYU hit .374 (51-11-107) against Utah … Nina Puikkonen (So., MB) led all hitters by hitting .533 with 17 kills and just one error in 30 attempts … She owns 24 double-digit kill matches in BYU’s 25 outings … Puikkonen leads the league in three statistical lists hitting percentage (.374), kills (4.33) and blocks (1.80) and ranks fourth in the nation in blocks … Anna-Lena Smith (Sr., S) collected match-highs with 40 assists and 10 digs and continues to lead the conference with a 13.17 assists per game average … Mari Carpenter (Sr., OH) returned to action against Utah after sitting out the four previous matches and contributed 10 kills while hitting .421 …. As a team, BYU continues to lead the league in two statistical categories - blocks per game (3.64) and hitting percentage (.296) … The Cougars close the regular season at home hosting Wyoming on Friday then seek to avenge their only loss when they face No. 11 CSU in the match that will likely decide the regular-season title on Saturday.

Colorado State Rams (24-1, 11-1 MWC)
The Rams avenged their only loss of the season and claimed a pair of four-game matches over UNLV and SDSU to pull even with BYU at the top of the conference standings … The Rams completed the home portion of their 1999 schedule undefeated (15-0) and improved their home win streak to 26 matches … CSU has claimed 18 matches in the minimum three games this season and is 4-0 in games that went the full five games … The Rams are 3-0 against ranked teams, including an upset of then-No. 8 BYU in the first battle between two nationally ranked conference teams … Courtney Cox (So., OH) established a new career-high and notched her third 20-plus outing with 24 kills and made it a double-double with 13 digs vs. UNLV … Catie Vagneur (Sr., OH), who stands second in the league with a team-high 4.05 kills per game average, drilled 20 kills vs. SDSU to make her fourth entry into the 20-kill club and registered a double-double with 12 digs … Kristen Vance (Sr., DS) notched her first 20-dig outing of the season in her final regular-season match in Moby Arena … Angela Knopf (So., MB) also hit double figures both nights (12 kills vs. UNLV and 16 vs. SDSU) and hit .344 for the week … As a team, CSU maintains the conference lead in kills (16.74) per game, service aces (1.92) and assists (15.17) … The Rams also stand second in hitting percentage (.255) … After drawing crowds of 1,563 (vs. SDSU) and 1,140 (vs. UNLV), CSU owns eight of the top-15 attendance figures in the MWC … The Rams drew the largest crowd by a MWC team to date when 4,112 cheered them to victory over BYU on Oct. 22 … Listed No. 11 in the USA Today/AVCA national poll this week, CSU plays at Utah Friday, then must face No. 10 BYU in the final match of the regular season . The winner of that match will likely be the first Mountain West Conference regular-season champion and earn the No. 1 seed in next week’s championship.

New Mexico Lobos (9-20, 4-8 MWC)
The Lobos climbed a notch in the league standings for the second consecutive week, moving into fifth place with a 3-1 win over Air Force on Friday … Micaela Conley (Jr., OH) led all hitters with a career-high 24 kills vs. Air Force to register her first 20-plus kill outing as a Lobo … Conley hit .452 (24-5-42) in the match and just missed her tenth double-double with nine digs … Vanessa Shields (So., MB) committed just one error with 11 kills in 24 attempts to hit .417 vs. Air Force … Amber Smith (Sr., OH) notched her fifth double-double with 14 kills and 12 digs vs. the Falcons … Janelle Torres (Sr., S) provided 59 assists and 14 kills of her own in the victory … Nana Allison (Sr., DS) also contributed 14 digs and served all three of the Lobos’ aces in the match as the three seniors played their final home match … Now just one game behind fourth-place Air Force, UNM plays at the same two teams as the Falcons this weekend sixth-place San Diego State and eighth-place UNLV in this week¹s action.

San Diego State Aztecs (10-16, 3-9 MWC)
The Aztecs dropped a slot in the league standings after suffering a pair of 3-1 losses last week … Jamie Evans (Sr., OH) registered two double-doubles to bring her total for the season to nine … Evans recorded 13 kills and 15 digs at Wyoming, then tallied 10 kills and 14 digs at CSU … She leads the Aztecs in both kills (268) and digs (237) on the season … Lisa Bostian (Sr., S/OH) enters the week with 1,550 career assists and needs just 39 more assists to move into a tie for seventh on the Aztecs’ all-time chart … Seeing most of her time at outside hitter in recent action, Bostian contributed 10 kills at Wyoming, then led the Aztecs with 14 kills at CSU … Earlier, named the Aztecs’ first Mountain West Conference Player of the Week recipient (Nov. 1), Nicole Akporiaye (Fr., MB) led all hitters at Wyoming with 16 kills and added nine at CSU … Katie Magnuson (So., OH) registered a double-double with 10 kills and a career-high 20 digs at CSU … The schedule has not been easy for SDSU which opened the season against four ranked opponents and has played a total of nine top-25 foes without a victory thus far … SDSU will look to snap a four-match slide when they host cross-town rival San Diego in the final non-conference match of the season on Wednesday … Currently tied for sixth place in the conference, the Aztecs will look to regain ground in the standings as they play host to fifth-place New Mexico Friday and fourth-place Air Force Saturday.

UNLV Rebels (10-13, 2-10 MWC)
The Rebels snapped a six-match losing streak with a 3-1 win at Wyoming, after falling in four games at CSU … Angie Sylvas (Sr., OH) recorded a pair of double-doubles, while Danielle Gerlach (Sr., OH) notched a double-double at Wyoming and reached double-digits in kills in both matches … Sylvas collected 10 kills and 18 digs at CSU, then at Wyoming she drilled 26 kills and totaled 14 digs … Her 26 kills is just one shy of her career high, stands as the third highest total in the MWC and is her fourth entry in the 20-kill club this season … Gerlach led the Rebels with 14 kills at CSU, then collected 13 kills and 15 digs at Wyoming … Maria Julia Goes (So., S) came in to provide 21 assists, nine digs and three blocks at CSU, then played the entire match at Wyoming and collected 45 assists, 13 digs and three blocks … After opening the season with a school-best seven consecutive wins, the Rebels have lost 10 of the last 12 matches, five of those losses have come at the hands of ranked foes (USC, Pepperdine, BYU twice and CSU) … UNLV claimed its first league win with an upset of previously undefeated No. 14-ranked Colorado State on Oct. 16 … The Rebels have a chance to climb as high as fifth in the conference standings, or could remain where they are in eighth, as they host fourth-place Air Force Friday and fifth-place New Mexico Saturday in the final regular-season action.

Utah Utes (19-7, 9-3 MWC)
The Utes had their regular-season title hopes squelched as they suffered a sweep at BYU Friday … McKelle Stilson (So., MB) led the Utes with nine kills while hitting .261 at BYU … Stilson leads the team with 351 total kills and has reached double figures in kills in 21 of 26 matches this season … Graciela Torres-Lopez (Sr., S), who owns three triple-doubles this season, has totaled 1,147 assists this season making her Utah’s all-time assist record holder with a career total to 4,853. Averaging 12.33 assists per game, Torres-Lopez continues to close in on the prestigious 5,000 milestone and needs just 147 to reach the mark … As a team, Utah leads the league in digs per game with a 15.84 average and is third in four other categories … All but one of Utah’s losses (vs. Georgia) this season have been to top 25 ranked teams (No. Iowa, Pepperdine, Stanford, BYU twice, and CSU) … Utah will be aiming at the 20-win plateau when it plays host to CSU and Wyoming in the final weekend of the regular-season … The Utes battled the Rams to five games on the road and can move into a tie for second in the league standings with an upset of CSU, but will need BYU to also defeat the Rams.

Wyoming Cowgirls (9-18, 3-9 MWC)
Led by this week’s conference player of the week, Melody Friehauf (Jr., MB), the Cowgirls split a pair of four-game matches last week … Wyoming defeated SDSU on Friday, then fell to UNLV Saturday … Friehauf claimed her second player of the week honor of the season after hitting .484 and averaging 4.25 kills and 1.75 blocks for the week … She notched her third double-figure blocking match with 10 vs. UNLV and owns 19 double-figure kill outings on the season, including the last seven in a row … Friehauf ranks second in the conference with a team-high .371 attack percentage and a 1.39 blocks per game average … She owns 955 career kills to stand seventh in Wyoming history and is second in career blocks with 436 to date … Michelle Keller (Fr., OH) drilled a career-high 15 kills and added 11 digs vs. SDSU … Rachel Lau (So., MB) also notched 15 kills while hitting .321 vs. SDSU … Jamie Burke (Jr., OH) was the fourth Cowgirl in double digits vs. SDSU as she collected a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs … Barbie Bragg (Jr., OH) notched her first career double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs vs. UNLV … The Cowgirls have a tough road this week, but could play spoiler, as they face two of the top three teams in the league (at BYU and Utah).

The Cougars have also reached the Regional Final seven times - including the past three years.

Colorado State has competed in the last four NCAA tournaments bringing its total to 10. San Diego State has made 12 NCAA appearances, New Mexico seven, Wyoming four and Utah one. In addition, CSU and Utah have each competed in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC).
