MOUNTAIN WEST VOLLEYBALL WEEK NINE QUICK HITS Colorado State, 3-0 vs. ranked teams, travels to BYU and Utah for top 20 matchups this week.
Oct. 28, 2001 MWC VOLLEYBALL QUICK HITS (Oct. 28) Colorado State travels to BYU and Utah for top 20 matchups this week. CSU is 3-0 vs. ranked opponents this season, but the Rams have not won in Provo since 1984. Utah and Colorado State are tied for the league's longest home win streak at 13 matches. Air Force -- The Falcons dropped matches to BYU and Utah last week. Delavane Diaz tallied 10 kills and hit .200 vs. the Utes. Tiffany Bishop hit a team-high .250 vs. the Cougars. BYU -- The Cougars swept Air Force and New Mexico last week. All-American Nina Puikkonen totaled a match-high 17 kills vs. the Falcons and added 12 vs. the Lobos. Puikkonen, who hit a season-high .609 vs. Air Force, has topped double figure kills in every match this season. Puikkonen is hitting .459 in her last four matches, while averaging .284 for the year. Colorado State -- The Rams are off to a 19-0 start this season--the best in school history--after wins over UNLV and San Diego State last week. Colorado State tied an MWC record with 19 straight wins, and has won an MWC record 33 straight games. Courtney Cox reached 20 kills in a match for the third time this season with 23 vs. UNLV. Cox also tied the MWC season-high for solo blocks in a match with four vs. San Diego State. New Mexico -- The Lobos dropped a pair of MWC matches last week, falling to BYU and Utah. Anna Reines topped double figure kills for the fifth straight match after posting 21 kills vs. Utah and 10 vs. BYU. Malena Thompson also has a five-match streak of 10 or more kills after totaling 10 in each match last week. San Diego State -- The Aztecs split a pair of matches last week, falling to No. 8 Colorado State, but defeating Wyoming. Five SDSU players reached double-figure kills in the win vs. the Cowgirls, including Rochelle Currier's match-high 19 kills. Not including the MWC Tournament, three of SDSU's next five matches are vs. ranked opponents, with a potential fourth ranked opponent at the Arizona Tournament. UNLV -- The Rebels posted a 1-1 record in league play last week as they held off Wyoming for a five-game win and dropped a match to No. 8 Colorado State. Patricia Assuncao (23) and Blair Wilkes (15) teamed up for 38 of UNLV's season-high 74 kills vs. the Cowgirls. Freshman Nicki King totaled a season-high 60 assists and added 15 digs for her third double-double of the year. Utah -- Utah stretched its win streak to eight straight matches with wins over New Mexico and Air Force last week. Six Utah players topped 10 kills vs. the Lobos, including Sylva Strzinkova's team-high 19 kills. Strzinkova added 18 digs for her league-leading 10th double-double of the season.
Wyoming -- The Cowgirls dropped a pair of MWC matches last week, but nearly upset UNLV in five games. Rachel Lau and Melissa Robinett each totaled 37 kills last week to lead the Cowgirls. Lau hit .379 vs. SDSU and .386 vs. UNLV.
