Utah Takes Control of MWC Race The second half of Mountain West play kicks off this week, highlighted by intrastate rivals No. 14 Utah and BYU battling each other Saturday on Crimson Court in Salt Lake City. Other matches on the weekend conference slate feature Wyoming at New Mexico on Thursday, the Cowgirls at Air Force, No. 9 Colorado State at UNM and UNLV at San Diego State on Friday, and the Rams at the Falcons on Saturday. The Utes and Cougars start their respective weeks off with home non-conference matches vs. Big East leader Notre Dame on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. MWC Quick Hits BYU -- BYU's three-game loss at Colorado State is the first time the Cougars have been swept this season. As a team, the Cougars lead the league in blocks per game in conference play (3.60). In all games, BYU is second in the MWC in hitting percentage (.276) and blocks per game (3.26), and third in assists per game (14.01), kills per game (15.63) and service aces per game (1.68). BYU sophomore Lindsy Hartsock, the nation's top blocker, had 11 blocks over the weekend and now averages 1.78 per game on the season. She is also third in the nation in hitting percentage with a .415 efficiency. Freshman Erica Lott is currently second on the team with a 3.24 kills per game average. Colorado State -- The Rams' 19-match home win streak was snapped with their 3-1 loss to No. 14 Utah on Friday. It was CSU's first home loss to the Utes since 1976. The Rams are now 2-2 against ranked opponents this season and 1-1 vs. teams ranked 18th (beat Pepperdine earlier this season). Colorado State ended the first half of league play with a 6-1 record for the fourth time since the inception of the Mountain West Conference (1999, 2000, 2002, 2004). CSU ended the first half of conference play undefeated (7-0) in 2001 and 2003. The Rams currently have a 2,035 home match attendance average this season, which is on pace to become the fourth highest average home attendance mark in school history. New Mexico -- The Lobos will play five of their final seven conference matches at home where they have a 5-4 record on the season. UNM is currently third in the MWC with 3.04 blocks per game in conference matches. Junior Chelsea Sondrup, the UNM all-time leader in block assists, is currently seventh on the school charts with 282 total blocks. Junior Nicole Ryan leads UNM and is ninth in the MWC with 3.22 kills per game. Senior Adah Burke is second in the league with 4.11 digs per game. Her career-high of 32 digs, set against Wyoming on Sept. 24, ranks second all-time in the MWC for an individual match and third all-time on the UNM list for individual matches. San Diego State - Freshman Aime Cordiero is currently second in the MWC in digs per game in league play (4.73). Since returning to the lineup on Sept. 21 from an abdominal injury, senior Kara Moriarty is averaging 3.59 kills per game and 2.07 digs per game. Moriarty is the lone returning Aztec starter from the 2003 season. UNLV -- UNLV's sweep of Air Force and New Mexico marks the first time the Rebels have swept two MWC opponents consecutively since 2002. The wins over the Falcons and Lobos also marked first back-to-back conference wins for the Rebels this season. As a team, UNLV hit .317 against UNM, which is the first time the Rebels have hit over .300 in a match this year. Senior Nicki King tallied her 3,795th career assist last weekend, which moved her into fourth place on the all-time MWC list. Utah -- No. 14 Utah defeated then-No. 7 Colorado State, 3-1, last weekend, snapping CSU's 23 match regular season conference win streak. Sophomomre middle blocker Amie Toone collected a career-high 11 blocks in the win, breaking her previous record of 10 set last season as a freshman against the Rams. The Utes are currently riding an all-time school record 12-match win streak. Utah has defeated two ranked teams during this span (then-No. 6 UCLA and CSU) and are 7-0 at home. Utah is also currently riding a 13-match home winning streak. Wyoming -- Wyoming beat BYU for the first time since Nov. 17, 1989 with its 3-1 victory on Friday.
