MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE ENTERS 10TH SEASON
The Mountain West Conference begins its 10th season of play in 2008. The league started play in the fall of 1999 with eight institutions - Air Force, BYU, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming. The MWC welcomed TCU as its newest member in July 2005. BYU won the inaugural volleyball title in 1999 with a 13-1 record. In the first nine years of the league Colorado State has won or shared six league crowns, followed by BYU and Utah with two apiece.
In 2007, BYU became the first Conference institution to participate in the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight. The MWC has 26 victories in NCAA Tournament play, including one Elite Eight appearance (BYU, 2007) and eight Sweet 16 berths.
A total of five Conference teams have participated in the postseason, with three of the five MWC teams that advanced to the postseason earning trips to the Sweet 16.
THE MTN. GOES NATIONAL
DIRECTV, the nation's leading satellite television service provider launched the MountainWest Sports Network - The Mtn. on August 27. The Mtn. will be available on channel 616 on DIRECTV CHOICE and above packages for the states servicing Mountain West Conference institutions (Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming and the designated market areas of Dallas/Fort Worth and San Diego). Customers throughout the remainder of the country will be able to access The Mtn. with a subscription to DIRECTV's Sportspack.
CSU AND BYU RANKED IN CBS COLLEGE SPORTS NETWORK/AVCA PRESEASON POLL
Colorado State earned a No. 17 ranking, while BYU nabbed the No. 20 spot and Utah received votes in the 2008 CBS College Sports Network/AVCA Division I Coaches Top-25 Preseason Poll released by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
The MWC has had at least one team ranked in the preseason top-25 nine out of the last 10 years.
