Rebels Sign Two For The Court
Wong, Winchester sign NLIs to play for UNLV in 2007.
June 1, 2007 LAS VEGAS - The Rebels signed two student-atheletes, Mercedes Winchester and Saulie-Ann (Nue) Wong, during the spring signing period to national letter of intents to enroll at UNLV in the fall of 2007 and play volleyball, head coach Allison Keeley announced. "Nue and Mercedes fit the UNLV offensive system well and will add depth and power to our offense," said Keeley. "They are physical, aggressive and able to attack from all three positions." Winchester is a senior at Walnut High School in Walnut, Calif. She comes to UNLV after lettering the past three years for the Mustangs volleyball team. Her squad won its league the past two seasons and advanced to the second round of the CIF Tournament. She can play around the net as a middle blocker or outside hitter. Besides volleyball, she excelled on the basketball court playing either the center for forward position. "Mercedes plays fast and physical in the middle. She will match up well with the middle blockers in the conference and can develop onto a top position player." Wong, who prefers to go by Nue, comes to Las Vegas from Waimea High School located on the island of Kauai in Hawaii. She plays at the front of the net as an outside hitter, middle blocker and/or an opposite hitter, while possessing the skills to play the back row, as well. She helped the Menehue to a Division II third place finish with an 11-1 record this past season. Prior to focusing on volleyball, she was on the softball and basketball teams and participated in track and field as a discuss and shot put thrower. "Nue hits an extremely heavy ball and will make a great addition to our outside attack. She plays a steady all around game and is comfortable on the court." The two signees joing Sara Nehf, who signed with the Rebels in the fall of 2006. Nehf and Wong were both on PrepVolleyball's Top 150 senior list.
