Horned Frog Volleyball enjoying successful spring Frogs are 4-0 this spring
April 9, 2007 FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU volleyball team's spring practices are in full swing with two tournaments under their belts. The Frogs are 4-0 in those two tournaments with wins over UT-Arlington, Baylor, Oklahoma and Arkansas. Kourtney Edwards has been a standout for TCU in both tourneys registering hitting percentages over .300 in all four matches. "Things are going well for us this spring," remarked Head Coach Prentice Lewis. "We are a tight, small group and each of them are holding the others accountable for their actions. They are really driven to excel next fall." In their first tournament of the spring, the Frogs headed across town to Dallas to take part in an event hosted by SMU. TCU defeated UT-Arlington by a 3-0 score in their first action of the spring. Later in the day, the Frogs rallied from a game one loss to claim a 2-1 victory over Baylor. Edwards hit .634 in the two matches, while LeMeita Smith posted a .456 hitting percentage. "Our defense and passing have been great this spring headed up by Calli Corley, Katelyn Blackwood and Mariana Silveira," raved Lewis. The Frogs hosted their own tournament this past weekend, adding two more victories to their resume. In the first match, TCU came away with a 2-0 win over Oklahoma. Another 2-0 over Arkansas followed to close out the day. Again Edwards was the leading hitter with a .454 hitting percentage, followed by a .330 percentage from Loren Barry. Barry and Nirelle Hampton have been running a straight-up 6-2 offense and both have performed well in their dual roles of setter and hitter. "We have two more tournaments remaining this spring and we are looking forward to seeing how we continue with our level of intensity," said Lewis. TCU returns 10 letterwinners from its 2006 squad that posted its third winning season in the last four years with a record of 17-15. The Frogs will next be in action this upcoming weekend when they head to Houston to take part in a 21-team tournament hosted at the Texas Tornados facility. In pool play, TCU will square off against Alabama and UTEP. The Alabama match is slated for a 9 a.m. start, while the UTEP match is set for 11 a.m. Bracket play will begin at 12:30 p.m.
