COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- BYU opposite hitter Erica Lott has been selected as one of 20 women's volleyball players from across the nation to participate in the U.S. Women's National Volleyball A2 program, USA Volleyball announced Friday.

"I feel very lucky," said Lott. "This is something I've wanted to do for a really long time, so I'm really excited for the opportunity. I'm looking forward to being in the gym all summer with some very good volleyball players. I'm excited for the challenge."

The 20 players, all with remaining collegiate eligibility, will be split into two 10-member squads during training sessions in late spring prior to competing in the USA Volleyball Adult Open Championships May 26-June 2 in Austin, Texas.

"We are very pleased to be able to field two teams of such a high caliber at the U.S. Open Championships," said USA Volleyball Managing Director of High Performance Tom Pingel. "This is a direct reflection on the level of athletes that attended the tryouts this past winter. Not only is the USA Volleyball staff looking forward to seeing this up-and-coming group of athletes train and compete in Austin in May, judging by the feedback from the athletes, they are anxiously looking forward to it as well."

Lott was one of just two opposite hitters selected to participate in the A2 program. The 6-foot-2 Orem, Utah, native switched from outside hitter to opposite prior to the 2006 season and was an All-Mountain West Conference selection. She finished the regular season ranked third in the MWC for kills and points and ninth in blocks. Lott reached 20 kills in four matches in 2006.

USA Volleyball held open tryouts Dec. 16-17, 2006, at Omaha and Feb. 23-25, 2007, at Colorado Springs for selection to the A2 Teams, in addition to the U.S. Women's Junior National Team and U.S. Women's National Team. Players invited to train with the U.S. Women's National Team starting in May will be announced as soon as all confirmations have been received from the invitee list. Selections to the U.S. Women's Junior National Team will be announced in early May.

Eight Cougars have had the opportunity to compete for the U.S., most recently Lindsy Hartsock and Lauren Richards in 2003 as members of the A2 U.S. National Team. Richards also played for the A2 team in 2002. Nina Puikkonen was a memeber of the A2 team in 2001 before moving up to the U.S. National Team in 2002. Amy Steele Gant and Korie Rogers both competed on the National Team in 1998. Charlene Johnson enjoyed a six-year stint on the National Team from 1996-2001, including the 2000 Summer Olympic Games, after playing on the U.S. Extended A Team in 1994. Dylann Duncan and Raelyn Hoglund also played for the U.S. after their respective BYU careers.
