BALTIMORE - In the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament, the 12th-ranked Colorado State volleyball team swept 25th-ranked Maryland, 30-23, 30-28, 30-26 to advance to the Regional Semifinals for the fourth time in five years. The Rams are now 30-4 on the season while the Terrapins end their season at 27-8.

Sophomore right side hitter Dre Downs led the Rams with 13 kills, while sophomore outside hitter Tess Rogers had 12 and junior middle blocker Bri Frech chipped in 10. Junior setter Melissa Courtney led the Rams with 11 digs and Frech led the team with four blocks.

Maryland was led by Lynnsy Jones with 15 kills and Maria DiLivio with 10 kills. Both players also had three aces and Fiona DeFreitas led all players with 16 digs.

"I continue to be amazed at how well our team competes," said Head Coach Tom Hilbert. "Maryland is an extremely tough serving team and an extremely good transition team and we didn't let that get to us. Our motto since the conference tournament has been to keep it close and win it at the end and that's what we did."

Downs scored the first two points of the match on kills, but Maryland scored the next three, including a block for the 3-2 lead. The Rams tied the score off a kill by Sarauer and then Sarauer had back-to-back errors for the 5-3 Maryland lead. Downs and Frech got consecutive kills to knot the score at 5-5. The teams traded points and then the Terrapins scored two straight for the 8-6 lead. The teams traded points until the 10-8 Maryland lead when the Rams scored two straight for the fifth tie of the match at 10-10. Maryland scored the next point and then the Rams rattled off three straight to take the 13-11 lead. Downs was called for a double hit violation and then after a Frech kill, Downs stepped back and served seven straight for the Rams, including three aces to give the Rams the 21-12 lead. The Terps scored the next two, including an ace by DiLivio to make the score 21-14. Frech got another Ram kill and then Maryland scored the next three to make the score 22-17. The teams traded pointns until 25-21 when the Rams scored four of the next five, including a block by Frech and Sarauer for the 29-22 lead and they would go on to win 30-23. CSU hit .304 and held the Terrapins to a .089 hitting percentage. Frech led the team with five kills.

 

 

Maryland scored the first two points of the second game off a block by DiLivio and Wagener and an ace by Jones. Rogers got a kill for the Rams to make the score 2-1. Maryland then used aggressive jump serving to score 10 of the next 12 points, including two aces for the 12-3 lead. Sarauer and Rogers got back-to-back kills for the Rams but then had three straight errors for the 15-5 Maryland advantage. Rogers got a kill and then Frech served an ace to bring the score to 15-7. After trading points the Rams scored two straight at 18-9 to make the score 18-11. The teams again traded points until 20-12. Bauer got a kill and then stepped back to serve, where she rattled off four straight, including an ace to close within three, 20-17. Maryland scored the next two, but the Rams answered with three points of their own, including an ace by Frech to make the score 22-20. The teams went back-and-forth until 26-24 Maryland. The Terps scored the next two, including a block of Bauer, but then Bauer got a kill and again stepped back to the service line where she ran off the final five points to give the Rams the 30-28 victory. During that stretch, Bauer had an ace and the Rams had two blocks. The Rams hit .371 in the second stanza, while Maryland hit .259.

Rogers started off the third game with an ace and the Rams took the early 3-0 lead. Maryland answered with four straight points, including an ace of its own. The score was tied at every point from four to eight when Courtney served an ace and then the Rams got a point due to a Maryland error for the 10-8 lead. The teams went back-and-forth until 13-11 when Maryland scored three straight to take the 14-13 advantage. Hilbert called a timeout and Bauer got a kill to tie the score. Maryland again took the lead on two straight kills by DiLivio for the 16-14 advantage. After trading points to make the score 18-16 UM, the Rams scored six striaght, two off Downs kills while Rogers was serving for the 22-18 lead. The Terrapins scored the next two to close within two and the teams traded points until 26-24. Treadwell got a Maryland kill but then Rogers got a CSU kill to make the score 27-25. Huddleston dumped the ball but CSU scored the last three to win 30-26.

Colorado State advances to the regional semifinals where they will face Florida. Further information will be released tomorrow.
