#2 Colorado State Defeats #7 New Mexico, 3-0

For CSU-UNM Photo Gallery, click here In the Mountain West Conference Volleyball Championship quarterfinals, #2 Colorado State (20-7) defeated the #7 seed New Mexico Lobos (14-14), 3-0. With the win, the Rams advance into the semifinals and will face the #3 seed Utah Utes on Friday at 5 p.m. (PST) at the Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas, Nev. The Rams made easy work of the Lobos with game scores of 30-18, 31-29, 30-13. The Lobos held a game point of their own in the second stanza, but CSU fought back and took a 2-0 lead into the break. In the match, CSU out hit UNM .352 to .084. The Rams never hit below the .237 mark and topped out in game three at .556 (18-3-27). The Lobos, on the other hand, hit for no average in game one, .233 in game two and -.080 in the third. CSU collected 16 more kills (46 to 30) than UNM and hit for seven less errors. CSU was paced by 10-kill efforts from Casey Bauer and Tonya Mokelki. Dre Down led all hitters with a .615 hitting average as she collected nine kills to one error in 13 attempts. Ashley Fornstrom helped on 36 of CSU's 40 assists registered. Katherine Whitney dug out a match-high 17 attacks. Mekena Barnes stuffed nine (all unassisted) attacks to top all players in blocks. Chelsea Sondrup registered a match-high 14 kills in a losing effort for the Lobos. Sondrup hit for a .550 clip as she had 20 total attempts and hit three errors. Tanna Taylor assisted on 26 kills, while Samie Weber had six digs.
No. 2 Colorado State vs. No. 7 New Mexico Match Notes: Colorado State has advanced to the MWC semifinals for the seventh straight year, winning 14 of its last 15 tournament matches overall. CSU now leads the all-time series with UNM, 33-21, and has won 20 of its last 21 over the Lobos. The Rams improved to 14-3 all-time in the MWC Tournament. The No. 7 seed is now 0-7 all-time in MWC Tournament play. New Mexico fell to 1-7 in MWC Championship play and have not won a match since the quarterfinal round of the 1999 tournament. Colorado State freshman Mekana Barnes set a career-high with nine blocks vs. the Lobos. Her nine total blocks ties the MWC Championship record for blocks by a freshman with Utah's Lori Baird, who broke the record in the first quarterfinal match of the day. Ram senior Tess Rogers moved into a tie for fourth in the all-time conference list for games played with 410. Rogers is tied with former San Diego State player Nicole Akporiaye (1999-02). Rogers also moved into a tie for fifth on the all-time matches played category. She is currently tied with former teammate Becky Sarauer (2001-04) with 120 career matches played. Colorado State freshman Ashley Fornstrom set a new MWC Tournament freshman record in services aces with five vs. New Mexico. Her service ace total also is tied for the fifth highest total in tournament history. New Mexico senior Chelsea Sondrup also moved up in MWC career matches and games played categories. Sondrup moved into fifth all-time in career games played with 407, while her 112 career matches is now tied for 13th on the MWC charts.
