FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The fourth-seeded BYU Cougars survived a long five-game fight against fifth-seeded UNLV on the opening day of the Mountain West Conference Tournament, 26-30, 32-30, 33-31, 16-30, 15-11. The match tied last year's final between Colorado State and Utah as the longest match in MWC Tournament history. BYU improves to 13-16 with the win while UNLV fell to 10-19.
BYU was led by Lindsey Metcalf with 17 kills, while Kimberly Wilson had 15 and both Laura Nielsen and Carrie Bowers added 10. Metcalf also hit a team-high .239 for the match. Uila Crabbe had a match-high 25 digs and Karina Puikkonen added 13 digs and 51 assists in the win. Bowers also led all players with nine blocks.
UNLV was led by Blair Wilkes with 20 kills, while Christina Kirschner and Leiana Oswald added 13 kills each and Patricia Assuncao added 10. Setter Nicki King led all players with five aces and had 55 assists, while Oswald led the Rebels with 18 digs. Assuncao also contributed 16 digs, while libero Nina Franchini had 15 and King tallied 11.
The entire match was a back-and-forth affair except for game four where the Rebels led wire to wire. In the second game, the Cougars had a nine-point advantage at 20-11 but UNLV would battle back and tie the game at 26-26. The game would then be tied the next four points before the Cougars would hold on for the 32-30 victory.
BYU will now face the winner of the #1 Colorado State vs. #8 Air Force match which begins at 7:00 p.m. In the other semifinal match, #3 Utah will play #2 San Diego State at 4:00 p.m. tomorrow.

The Cougars entered this year's MWC Tournament as a No. 4 seed for the first time. The Rebels were a No. 5 seed for the second straight year. UNLV won its first MWC Tournament match last year by defeating San Diego State in five games.
BYU moves on to the MWC Tournament semifinals for the fourth straight year. BYU plays the winner of Air Force and Colorado State in the Thursday evening quarterfinal.
UNLV entered this year's MWC Tournament 0-7 all-time at Moby Arena (0-6 vs. Colorado State and 0-1 in 2002 MWC Tournament).
Not only has BYU never lost in the first round of a conference tournament, the Cougars posted a 3-0 record en route to the title at the last MWC Tournament in Moby Arena (2000).
UNLV fell to 0-6 in five-game matches this season, including two five-game losses to BYU.
UNLV's Leiana Oswald notched double figure kills in four straight matches entering today's match. Against the Cougars, she posted her sixth double-double this season and 15th overall with 13 kills and 18 digs.
BYU's Lindsey Metcalf recorded double-doubles in two of her last three matches heading into the UNLV match today. Including 17 kills vs. the Rebels today, Metcalf notched double figure kills in five of eight matches since returning from an ankle injury.
BYU's Karina Puikkonen recorded her seventh double-double of the season and 18th overall with 51 assists and 13 digs.
