SAN DIEGO - Utah swept Wyoming (30-20, 30-22, 30-20) in the first round of the Mountain West Conference Championship in San Diego today. With the win, the Utes improve to 19-7 on the year. The Cowgirls fall to 15-16. Utah hit for .404 on the match, compared to the .180 of Wyoming. The Utes also out-blocked the Cowgirls 10-2. "I was really pleased with our focus," Utah head coach Beth Launiere said. "We came in ready to play and were prepared. When we do that, we play pretty good volleyball." Senior All-America candidate Kim Turner finished with a match-high 16 kills for Utah, to go along with eight blocks and five digs. Sophomore Shelly Sommerfeldt added nine kills, while juniors Kelsie Kartchner and Lyndsey Henderson finished with eight apiece for the Utes. Freshman Andrea Seele led the Cowgirls with nine kills, while setter Katy Brown dished up 27 assists and hit .800 (4-0-5). All-MWC performer Sara Maytorena totaled eight kills. Kartchner, who didn't commit an error on the match and hit for .800, also added 16 assists, three service aces and five blocks. Junior setter Tracy Neumeier finished with 21 assists and a team-high nine digs, while senior libero Jackie Morrill finished with eight digs.
In game one, Utah used an early 5-0 run to go up 6-1 and never looked back, building its lead to as many as 10 on six occasions. The Utes hit for .423 on the game and held Wyoming to .175. Utah also out-blocked the Cowgirls 4-0. Sommerfeldt had six kills to pace the Utes. Utah led throughout all of game two, winning 30-22. The Utes combined for a .455 hitting percentage, compared to the .294 of Wyoming. Game three was the closest of the three, as Utah didn't pull away until the latter part of the game, winning 30-20.
UP NEXT: Utah advances to the semifinals of the tournament at 4 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 21, where it will face the winner of the Brigham Young vs. Air Force match. |
