FORT COLLINS, Colo. - No. 1 seed Utah needed five games to edge the UNLV Rebels 3-2 (27-30, 35-33, 30-22, 21-30, and 11-15) in the first MWC semifinal match Friday at Moby Arena in Fort Collins, Colo. The Utes advanced to their fourth straight MWC Tournament championship match where they will face the winner of the Colorado State/BYU match.

Utah hit .144 in the match and held UNLV to a .096 efficiency. The Utes also outblocked the Rebels 22-9 and finished with 70 kills.

Shelly Sommerfieldt and Lyndsey Henderson led the Utes with 17 kills each. Sommerfeldt also contributed 14 digs and four total blocks. Kelsie Kartchner had 24 digs in the match which is the second-highest individual total in MWC Tournament history. Amie Toone chipped in with seven total blocks.

UNLV had three players with double figures in kills. Freshman outside hitter Brittani Lumsden had 14, sophomore middle blocker Lauren Miramontes had 13 with four blocks and senior outside hitter Tarin Keith led her team with 17 kills.

There were 35 ties and 20 lead changes in the match. Utah and UNLV both had 96 digs in the match, which is a new Mountain West Conference Tournament single-match record. The total of 192 digs by both teams set a new MWC Championship match record for digs by two teams. In total, five tournament match records were broken.

Utah will face off with the winner of the Colorado State/BYU match on Saturday at 3 p.m. for the 2004 MWC Tournament title.
