Nov. 11, 2002

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Without the services of sophomore libero Lindsey Kerr -- who leads the Mountain West Conference in digs and reception-to-kill ratio -- the Colorado State volleyball team still defeated the New Mexico Lobos in three games, 30-26, 30-20, 30-26 to improve to 17-8 overall and 9-2 in Mountain West action. The Lobos fall to 7-17 overall and 2-9 in league play.

Kerr is sick and listed as day-to-day. Freshman Tess Rogers led all players with 18 kills and had a stretch with five straight kills for the Rams and a service ace at the beginning of game two. Senior Michelle Knox tallied 11 kills to mark the 11th straight conference match in double figures in kills. Sophomore Becky Sarauer, playing all six rotations for the first time in her career, tied a career-high with nine digs on the evening and also added nine kills. Sophomore Katie Jo Shirley, who was the libero in game three, led all players with 14 digs. Freshman Casey Bauer was the libero in games one and two for CSU and then played back row for freshman Melissa Dennett in game three. Dennett notched a career-high three kills.

"This was a strange match for us," said Colorado State Head Coach Tom Hilbert. "We did a lot of different things tonight. When Lindsey Kerr is not on the court it makes a huge difference for us. Her passing and serve receive are huge for us, but I thought Casey did a good job for us in the first two games."

Anna Reines led New Mexico with 11 kills and hit a team-high .409. Senior Blaire Burns led the Lobos with 13 digs and Staci Masten led the way with three blocks on the evening.

"Without Lindsey Kerr, I thought Colorado State played really well," stated New Mexico Head Coach Kelley Sliva. "She's the glue of the team in a lot of aspects and I thought Katie Jo Shirley was very solid at the libero position. With the end of the conference season coming all of the coaches are thinking about the all-conference team and its really hard when two of the top freshman are on the same team. Is it Downs or Rogers and tonight it was clearly Rogers for CSU."

Colorado State will close out its conference regular season tomorrow evening against Air Force which played at Wyoming this evening. The Rams will then finish MWC regular-season play at Utah and BYU next Friday and Saturday before hosting the Mountain West Conference Championship from Nov. 21-23 in Moby Arena.
