Sept. 10, 2011
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (6-4 overall) suffered a tough four-set loss (23-25, 25-23, 29-31, 23-25) against the Idaho State Bengals (5-5 overall) on Saturday afternoon in Laramie. The Cowgirls finished second in the tournament, while junior Jodi Purdy and redshirt freshman Erin Kirby earned All-Tournament honors.
"Idaho State followed their game plan and out played us today," said head coach Carrie Yerty. "They did the same things and we didn't make adjustments. The Bengals tipped and scored and we couldn't seem to stop it. They came in and executed, which that hurt us down the stretch."
Jodi Purdy finished with a double-double recording a season high 19 kills while adding 14 digs. Freshman Erin Kirby tied her career high with 11 kills, while adding six total blocks. Wyoming hit .173 (57-28-168) for the match. Idaho State had four starters in double-figures led by Breanne Van Every. She finished with 16 kills and 11 digs. Whitney Bartschi and Vanessa Muir each recorded 14, while Danielle Downs added 12 kills. The Bengals hit .230 (66-26-174) for the match and out blocked Wyoming 13.5-8.0.
Wyoming took an early 5-2 lead to begin the match. Idaho State scored the next eight of ten to take their first lead, 10-7. After the Cowgirls pulled to within one, 10-9, the Bengals went on an 8-5 run to regain a four point lead, 18-14. UW battled back and tied it up at 20 all. ISU scored three of the next four points to go up by two, 23-21. The Cowgirls scored the next point but that was as close as they would get. Idaho State won the set 25-23.
The scoring went back and forth to begin the second set as the two teams were tied up at six all. The Cowgirls gained a small advantage with a 6-3 run to make it 12-9, and would extend it to five, 18-13. Idaho State scored four straight to pull within one, 18-17. Wyoming kept their composure and built the lead back to four, 23-19. After earning set point, the Bengals scored four times before Wyoming closed out the set, 25-23.
Both teams came out to battle in their third set as neither team gained a significant advantage. With the score all tied up at 11, the Cowgirls scored six of nine to take a 17-14 lead. Idaho State scored the next three points to make it 17 all. A 5-2 run from Wyoming put them back up three, 22-19, which was quickly answered with four of five points by Idaho State. The Cowgirls would have four set points and would hold off three by the Bengals. Unfortunately, Idaho State came out on top 31-29.
The momentum seemed to shift to the side of the Cowgirls as they opened up a 9-2 lead to begin the four set. They continued to hold onto a six to seven points but unfortunately Idaho State wouldn't go away. With the score 18-11 in favor of Wyoming, the Bengals went on a 9-2 run to tie it up at 20 all. The Cowgirls scored the next point, but ISU scored three straight to go up by two, 23-21. Despite Wyoming's effort to hold off two match points, Idaho State would win the set, 25-23, and the match 3-1.
Wyoming will play their final pre-season tournament next weekend. They will be at the College of Charleston Invite, Setp. 16-17, in Charleston, S.C.
