Volleyball recap: Rams rolls past Albany
CSU improves to 5-1 on the season
Sept. 3, 2011
FORT COLLINS, Colo.—After beating No. 5 Nebraska on Friday night, the Colorado State Rams volleyball team continued its winning ways by beating the Albany Great Danes, 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 27-25), Saturday night at Moby Arena.
“One of our main keys here was to treat this match with a lot of respect,” Head Coach Tom Hilbert said. “I thought Albany, offensively did some pretty good things. They hit.234, we had .256. We beat them primarily because of missed serves. It was a pretty close game but it seems like we had control of it.”
In the second set, the Rams’ offense stayed strong while the Dane’s began making errors. Leading 19-13, redshirt freshman Marlee Reynolds entered the contest and recorded a kill. Set 2 was wrapped up with a Deedra Foss ace along with an attack error by Albany’s Gabby Whitworth.
The Rams’ offense came out strong in the third set, but the Danes rallied back to tie the score at 20-20. CSU reached match point with a 24-20 lead, but Albany fought back before freshman Kaila Thomas gave the Rams the victory.
On the night, CSU hit .290, while recording 40 kills and a season-high seven service aces.
“The third game I wanted to rest Kate (Steffan) for sure, but I wanted to see some other people play and I’m really glad we got a chance to do that,” Hilbert said. “I’m glad that we had some reserves in the game to win it in the end. I think that’s really important moving forward.”
