Duncan Earns Sportsmanship Award at Southern Closed The Horned Frog enjoyed a big week in singles and doubles action
June 27, 2009
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – TCU women’s tennis player Kayla Duncan added another summer highlight to her resume by claiming the Sportsmanship Award and reaching the singles semifinals and doubles quarterfinals at the USTA Southern Closed. Out of a field of 256 players, Duncan entered the weekend as the No. 17 seed in singles for the prestigious tournament. After enjoying a pair of byes to open the week, the Winston Salem, N.C., native dismantled Devon Sutherland (6-2, 6-2) in the Round of 64 and followed by upending ninth-seeded Dylan Windom (6-1, 6-1) in the Round of 32. Duncan had to move past No. 5 seed Maria Mira (6-1, 6-3) to move into the quarterfinals. After sending home Allison Falkin (6-3, 6-2), Duncan ended her week with a 6-1, 6-2 defeat at the hands of Caroline Price in the semifinals. In doubles play, Duncan and partner Whitney Kay advanced to the Round of 16 without picking up a racket, due to an opening bye and a retirement in the Round of 32. The duo took down Kechinye Didia and McKinley Mason (8-2), before bowing out to Alexandra Anghelescu and Rachael Hart in the quarterfinals (8-6). Duncan secured her spot at the USTA Southern Closed after claiming the N.C. State Tar Heel Qualifier On June 7. The 2009 All-Mountain West Conference singles and doubles selection led the Horned Frogs with a 17-6 singles record during the spring for a combined clip of 27-7 overall. Duncan tied Paty Alburto, Rene Simpson and Daria Zoldakova for the second-most wins in a single season by a freshman at TCU, falling one victory shy of Lucie Dvorakova's 28 win total in 1996.
