Harkins continues run in main draw of Pro Circuit event

TCU junior has won four consecutive matches in straight sets

FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU women's tennis player Macall Harkins defeated fellow Horned Frog Anna Sydorska on Wednesday in the opening round of the main draw of the Baylor All Saints Medical Centers Pro Tennis Classic held at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.

Both Harkins and Sydorska won three matches in the singles qualifying draw to earn a ticket to the tournament's main draw. Sydorska knocked off No. 2 Samantha Powers in the third round, while Harkins upended top-seeded Emelyn Starr in straight sets in the final round.

Harkins came to TCU last season after spending two years at the University of Illinois. With the Illini, Harkins played at the top singles position and finished the 2006 season ranked No. 71 by the ITA. Due to transfer rules, Harkins was unable to play during the 2007 season for the Horned Frogs.

Current TCU freshman Nina Munch-Soegaard also appeared in the tournament's main draw, as the Amarillo, Texas, native fell to Nicole Gibbs in the opening round.

TCU was also represented in the doubles main draw. Sydorska and former Frog standout Helena Besovic came from behind to defeat Munch-Soegaard and Austin, Texas, standout Ashley Weinhold, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. Munch-Soegaard and Weinhold were the tournament's No. 2 seeded doubles team. Besovic and Sydorska will face Jessica and Megan Alexander of Dallas on Thursday at 8 p.m.
