Munch-Soegaard and Besovic claim doubles title at El Paso Futures Doubles duo wins four matches at USTA event
May 28, 2007 EL PASO, Texas - Current TCU women's tennis player Nina Munch-Soegaard teamed up with former Frog standout Helena Besovic to take the doubles crown at the USTA Pro Circuit event in El Paso, Texas, on Sunday. The duo won four matches and defeated Ashley Brown (AUS) and Sabrina Capannolo (USA) in the championship match, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6(1).
After rolling through the first round, Munch-Soegaard (NOR) and Besovic (BIH) knocked off the tournament's No. 2 seed of Whitney Jones (USA) and Tiya Rolle (USA) by a score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the semifinal match where the duo won in straight sets.
Munch-Soegaard, a freshman on the TCU squad, claimed Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year honors after leading the team with a 21-6 dual record in singles. Munch-Soegaard also went 19-9 in dual match play in doubles this spring. Besovic, who starred for the Horned Frogs from 2004-06, received All-MWC singles and doubles honors her senior season in 2006.
Munch-Soegaard also competed in the singles portion of the tournament, where the Amarillo, Texas, native advanced to the quarterfinals. Munch-Soegaard recorded two straight sets victories, including an upset of the No. 8 seeded Fabiana Mak (BRA), before falling to Asia Muhammed (USA) by a score of 6-4, 6-0. Besovic advanced to the championship match of the singles competition.
After claiming the doubles title, Munch-Soegaard traveled to the Houston Futures event and qualified for the main draw, which will take place on Tuesday. For complete results of the tournament, visit www.gofrogs.com.
