TCU duo's run falls short in semifinals Tandem ends season with 25-7 record
May 27, 2007 ATHENS, Ga. - The No. 4 seeded TCU duo of Ana Cetnik and Anna Sydorska fell in the semifinals of the NCAA Division I Doubles Championship on Sunday to North Carolina's No. 2 seeded pair of Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long by a score of 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
"We came up against a really tough team today that had beaten us earlier this season at the National Team Indoors Tournament and we knew it was going to be a battle," said TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond. "It was a very tough match up for us, but we fought hard and did our absolute best. I'm very proud of their efforts, not only in this match, but also throughout the season. Making the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament is an honor."
With the match tied at 2-2 in the first set, UNC's Anundsen and Long reeled off four consecutive games as Cetnik and Sydorska dropped their first set of the tournament. Down 1-0 in the second frame, the Frogs rallied back to win six games and force the match to a third set. The Frog duo began the third frame down 2-0, and battled back to a 2-2 tie before dropping two more games to trail 4-2. Cetnik and Sydorska moved to within one game at 4-3, but couldn't come any closer, falling 6-3.
The doubles pair of Cetnik and Sydorska will go down as one of the top doubles teams in TCU history. The duo went 13-4 this spring and 25-7 overall this season, knocking off eight ranked opponents in dual matches. By earning the No. 4 national seed in the NCAA Tournament, Cetnik and Sydorska were named 2007 Doubles All-Americans. The Frogs advanced to the semifinals of the doubles portion for only the second time in school history.
Cetnik, a senior from Belgrade, Serbia, ends her TCU career with the most doubles wins in a single season in school history with 35, while Sydorska places in a tie for second with 34. Cetnik also finished third all-time in doubles wins and seventh in career combined victories with 96 and 175, respectively.
