Cetnik and Sydorska cruise to quarterfinals Duo records 32nd victory of the season
May 25, 2007 ATHENS, Ga. - The TCU doubles duo of Ana Cetnik and Anna Sydorska defeated Tennessee's No. 28 ranked duo of Caitlin Whoriskey and Zsofia Zubor, 6-2, 6-4, on Friday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga., to advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I Individual Doubles Championships.
"Ana and Anna played very well today with great intensity and focus," said TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond. "Even when it got close in the second set, the same elements remained constant. Tennessee was very solid and it was a really nice win."
The No. 4 seeded Frog duo trailed 2-1 early in the first set, but went on to win eight consecutive games to take a 3-0 lead in the second frame. The Volunteers fought back to a 5-4 score, and brought the final game to deuce, but the Frogs were able to win the last two points to take the match.
With the win, Cetnik and Sydorska improved their spring record to 12-4 and defeated their seventh ranked tandem of the season. Overall this year, both Cetnik and Sydorska have won 32 doubles matches, placing them in sole possession of third place in TCU history. Cetnik also secured her 93rd career doubles victory and 172nd career combined victory, which ranks third and ninth, respectively, in school history.
The Frogs will face the winner of the doubles match between Northwestern's No. 9 duo of Prousis and Rose and Pepperdine's No. 38 tandem of Dulgheru and Kosakowski on Saturday in the quarterfinals. Saturday's match will mark only the second time that a TCU women's doubles team has advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship, as Ana Cetnik and Story Tweedie-Yates made it the semifinals in 2005.
