Kovacek and Gersic lose opening round doubles match at NCAA Women's Tennis Championship Men's singles gets underway tomorrow
May 24, 2005 ATHENS, GA. -¬ New Mexico's Iva Gersic and Maja Kovacek lost their opening round doubles match to No. 4-seeded Daniela Bercek and Riza Zalameda of UCLA, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3, at the NCAA Women's Doubles Tennis Championship at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga., Tuesday. Gersic and Kovacek, ranked No. 11, lost the first set before rallying to win the second. The New Mexico duo fell down 0-2 in the third set but bounced back to tie it up at two. However, the UCLA team won four of the next five games to win the match. Gersic and Kovacek end the season with a doubles record of 33-8 and were ranked as high as No. 4 nationally this year. Earlier in the day in singles action, Kovacek lost to No. 14-ranked Story Tweedie-Yates of TCU, 6-2, 7-6, in the women's second round. Kovacek fell down 2-5 in the second set before battling back to tie the set at 5-5. After Tweedie-Yates went ahead 6-5, Kovacek forced a tiebreaker but ultimately fell in straight sets. The No. 45-ranked Kovacek ends the year with a singles record of 31-9. On the men's side, the individual championship brackets were released today. In singles play tomorrow, No. 74-ranked Henner Nehles of UNLV will play No. 39-ranked Scott Brown of Vanderbilt at 11 a.m., CT. Air Force's Shannon Buck, ranked No. 67, will face No. 42-ranked Josh Cohen of Miami, at 12:30 p.m., CT. In doubles play that starts Thursday, New Mexico's Ryan Stotland and David Kowalski will play No. 1 seed John Isner and Antonio Ruiz of Georgia. Utah's Miron Mann and Zach Ganger, selected as alternates, earned a place in the draw and will face No. 38-ranked Marko Rajevac and David North of Georgia Tech. The men's singles and doubles championships are being held at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas.
