SAN DIEGO - Aztec senior tennis player Silvia Tornier has been named a first-team Verizon Academic All-District VIII selection. A three-time recipient of the honor, Tornier earned a bachelor's degree in kinesiology with a 3.85 grade-point average and is now working toward her MBA.

A native of Hamburg, Germany, Tornier plays number one singles and doubles for the 27th-ranked Aztecs. She is currently ranked 34th nationally in doubles and 83rd nationally in singles. She ended the regular season with a 14-match winning streak, compiling a 24-8 singles record in 2003, including a 21-5 dual record. In doubles action, Tornier posted a 26-5 record with a 23-4 dual mark and qualified for the NCAA championships.

Tornier is a two-time Mountain West Conference women's tennis player of the year (2002 and 2003) honoree in addition to being named to the all-conference singles and doubles teams three times in the span of her career. A two-time league player of the week, Tornier is also a two-time all-MWC academic selection.

Tornier was one of 10 student-athletes from nine schools who were voted to the all-district first team in the at-large category. The at-large team encompasses the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling, and was voted on by CoSIDA members from within District VIII.
