ALBUQUERQUE - University of New Mexico womenÕs tennis player Natalia Alekhova was selected by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association as the Central RegionÕs Tennis Magazine/Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sportsmanship and Leadership Award winner. Alekhova will be included in a select group of seven other regional winners to be considered for the national award. The winner will be announced at the NCAA WomenÕs Tennis Championships in Stone Mountain, Ga., on May 23.

A senior from Novosibirsk, Russia, Alekhova went 23-13 in singles and and 22-13 in doubles and was named to the 2001 womenÕs all-conference team. Currently ranked 95th in the country, she is tied for second on the UNM career wins list with 111. In the classroom, Alekhova has a 3.72 grade point average in psychology and is expected to be named to the academic all-conference team for the fourth consecutive year.

Alekhova is the second Lobo tennis player to win this award, as senior Takeshi Itoh won it on the menÕs side.
