Air Force women's tennis player Laura Nigro is the recipient of the 2003 Arthur Ashe Jr. Leadership and Sportsmanship Award for the Central Region, presented by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The award goes to a player who has exhibited outstanding leadership and sportsmanship as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.

Nigro was selected from the region's 33 teams and is one of eight finalists for the national sportsmanship award, which will be announced on Wednesday, May 21.

"This award is well deserved for Laura," said Air Force head coach Kim Gidley. "Playing No. 1 singles and doubles on a team demands natural leadership qualities. Laura led by example every practice and every match this season. When someone puts in the effort like she does day in and day out and has achieved the things she has, it is nice to see her get the recognition she deserves."

The junior from Lincoln, Neb., earned all-conference honors in singles and doubles this season after leading the Falcons to a 15-13 overall record. She posted a 12-11 mark at No. 1 singles, and paired with fellow junior Gina Black for an impressive 15-9 record at No. 1 doubles. Nigro has a 55-50 career singles record and is 65-36 in overall doubles matches in three years at the Academy.
