New Mexico And UNLV Advance To The Semifinals Of The MWC Women's Tennis Championship New Mexico defeats Wyoming, 4-0, while UNLV posts a 5-0 victory over Colorado State.
April 28, 2005 SAN DIEGO - No. 2 seed New Mexico and No. 3 seed UNLV each posted first-round shutouts to advance to the semifinals of the 2005 Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Championship, Thursday afternoon at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif. New Mexico defeated No. 7 seed Wyoming, 4-0. The Lobos won all three doubles matches, including an 8-3 victory by No. 8-ranked Maja Kovacek and Iva Gersic at No. 1 doubles over Wyoming's Patricia Chien and Karolina Rowinski. The Lobos then won at No. 1, 2 and 5 singles to clinch the victory. New Mexico's Lucy Scott posted a 6-0, 6-3, triumph over Amy Senko before MWC Co-Players of the Year, Kovacek and Gersic, won at No. 1 and 2 singles, respectively to clinch it for New Mexico. UNLV posted a 5-0 victory over No. 6 seed Colorado State. Gyorgyi Zsiros and Claire Smith defeated Alexandra Paganetti and Dasha Zhurin, 8-0, at No. 3 doubles, as the Lady Rebels earned the doubles point. In singles play, UNLV won at No. 1-4 singles, including a 6-2, 6-1 win by No. 28-ranked Elena Gantcheva over Zhurin at No. 1 singles. Zsiros, Anne Claire Ortiz-Luis and Sharon Marin also won singles matches. These two matches were the first of four women's quarterfinal matches today. BYU-Air Force and San Diego State-Utah play later this afternoon. The Lobos play UNLV in the semifinals of the Mountain West Conference Championship at the Barnes Tennis Center, Friday at 10 a.m. 2005 Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Championship
