SAM DIEGO - San Diego State is the host school and No. 2 seed for the Mountain West Conference women's tennis championships being contested Thursday through Saturday at two sites, SDSU and the Barnes Tennis Center.

UNLV is the No. 1 seed for the eight-team competition. The winner is to advance to the NCAA Division I Regionals May 9-11 at a site to be selected.

Coach Peter Mattera's Aztecs, coming off a 19-5 regular season - the most victories by an Aztecs women's team since '86 - is to oppose Utah, the No. 7 seed, at SDSU at 2 p.m. Thursday. On the same courts at 10 a.m., UNLV is to play No. 8 Wyoming.

Thursday's matches at the Barnes Center match BYU, seeded No. 4, against Colorado State, seeded No. 5, at 10 a.m.; and New Mexico, seeded No. 5, against Air Force Academy, seeded No. 6, at 2 p.m.

Semifinals are at SDSU on Friday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Finals are 2 p.m. Saturday at SDSU.

The SDSU team is ranked No. 25 nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Silvia Tornier of Hamburg, Germany, is SDSU's No. 1 singles player, followed, in order, by Lindsey Hedberg of Austin, Texas; Katalina Romero of Tijuana; Katja Karrento of Mariehamm, Finland; Patricia Graf of Munich, Germany; and Indra Erichsen of Husum, Germany.
