Athlete of the Week

Julie Chidley, So., San Diego State
San Diego State sophomore Julie Chidley is this week¹s McLeodUSA Mountain West Conference Women¹s Tennis Player of the Week.

Chidley played a key role as San Diego State claimed a 5-4 victory over crosstown rival San Diego in its only action of the week on Wednesday. The sophomore from Riverside, Calif., rolled past USD¹s Annia Seppi (6-0, 6-1) in the No. 6 position to tie the match at three all following singles play. She then teamed with Lindsey Hedberg at No. 3 doubles to win the deciding match, 8-6, over USD¹s duo of Polumbis/Pyne.

Chidley has won her last four matches, and seven of the last eight. She owns a dual record of 11-5 this season and leads the team with 19 total victories. SDSU is ranked No. 32 in the nation and owns an 11-7 team record and stand 7-7 against ranked opponents.

This is the third player of the week award of the season for the Aztecs and the first for Chidley.

UNLV Host of 2000 Mtn. West Women¹s Tennis Championship
The inaugural Mountain West Conference Women¹s Tennis Championship will be hosted by UNLV in Las Vegas, Nev. All eight Mtn. West women¹s tennis teams will compete in the straight-draw team event for the first league title April 27-29. First-round losers shall move to the consolation bracket and first-round winners to the championship bracket in the single-elimination event. There is not an official regular-season Mtn. West conference schedule, however dual match results against conference members will be a factor in determining tournament seeding. All requests for media credentials for the inaugural Mountain West Conference Women¹s Tennis Championship should be submitted in writing to Director of Communications Elaine Adams at the Mtn. West office or UNLV Media Relations contact Mark Wallington prior to the event.

Team-By-Team Notes
One of four teams idle this week, Air Force will conclude the regular-season at conference foes Colorado State on Saturday and Wyoming Sunday. BYU lost both matches to ranked opponents during its final regular-season action last week. The No. 30-ranked Cougars fell to No. 7 Florida, 8-1, and No. 35 Arkansas, 5-1. Colorado State will return to action following a two-week break to host Air Force on Saturday, then at Northern Colorado the 20th and wraps the season hosting Wyoming on Friday the 21st. Ranked No. 41 in the nation, New Mexico posted an 8-1 win over Texas/El Paso and finishes the season with a trip to California. The Lobos will play at No. 4 Pepperdine on Thursday, then at conference foe San Diego State Sunday. Conference player of the week Julie Chidley and partner Lindsey Hedberg clinched the match as No. 32 San Diego State defeated No. 68 San Diego. The Aztecs conclude the season hosting Fresno State on Friday and New Mexico Sunday. Idle since Apr. 2, UNLV will conclude the regular-season hosting Wyoming on Apr. 25. Utah also took the week off and wraps the season at home against Southern Utah on Saturday. Wyoming split its matches, falling to No. 23 Tulsa, but defeating Oral Roberts. The Cowgirls wrap the season against three conference foes - Air Force the 16th, CSU the 21st and UNLV the 25th.
