MWC Tennis and Women's Tennis Players of the Week (4/12/01) SDSU's Oliver Maiberger and Lindsey Hedberg take home conference honors.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State University sophomores Oliver Maiberger and Lindsey Hedberg have been selected Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week, respectively. Hedberg earns MWC honors for the second time this season while Maiberger earns the nod for the second consecutive week and fourth time this season. Maiberger's hot streak continues as he went a perfect 4-0 in singles and doubles play this past weekend. In singles play, Maiberger remains undefeated in the No. 1 spot at 15-0 on the year. The Lorsch, Germany, native defeated Air Force's Eric Pittman, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, and New Mexico's Takeshi Itoh, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. The two singles victories moved him up a notch in the national rankings to No. 21 in the country. In doubles play, Maiberger and teammate Adam Webster posted two victories in the No. 1 position to improve them to 8-2 on the year. The duo defeated pairs from Air Force, 8-6, and New Mexico, 9-7. The Aztecs, who were unranked just two weeks ago, move up to No. 58 this week after defeating Air Force, 7-0, and New Mexico, 4-3. The Aztecs went a perfect 5-0 in conference play this year to capture the regular season title in the Mountain West Conference. Maiberger has earned MWC Player of the Week honors six times in his career.
Hedberg posted a 5-1 singles and doubles record this past weekend, highlighted by winning eight of her last nine singles matches and beating a nationally ranked pair in doubles play. Debuting at the No. 1 spot this past weekend, the Austin, Texas, native defeated Wyoming's Jenny Bowman, 7-6 (4), 6-1, and Colorado State's Morena Jovisic 6-0, 6-1. Hedberg has gone unbeaten in singles in league play. In No. 1 doubles action, Hedberg and teammate Silvia Tornier soundly defeated San Diego's No. 20 ranked doubles pair of Heather Polumbus and Krista Manning, 8-4. They also posted decisive victories over duos from Wyoming, 8-2, and Colorado State, 8-2. The No. 65 ranked Aztecs upset in-state rival and No. 47th-ranked University of San Diego, 4-3, and defeated conference foes Wyoming, 7-0, and No. 75 Colorado State, 6-1, to boost them to a No. 52 national ranking as of this week.
