SDSU's Maiberger and UNLV's Janus Named MWC Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week, Respectively

Janus garners honor for first time this season.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State University sophomore Oliver Maiberger and UNLV sophomore Paulina Janus have been selected Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week, respectively. Janus earns MWC honors for the first time this season while Maiberger is a third time winner this year.

Maiberger won all four singles matches this past week to improve to 13-0 in singles play on the year in the No. 1 position. The unranked Aztecs went 3-1 this past week, knocking off conference foes No. 73 BYU, 5-2, Utah, 5-1, and No. 32 UNLV, 5-1. The Aztecs were narrowly defeated by No. 31 Middle Tennessee State, 4-3. The Lorsch, Germany, native, who is currently ranked No. 22 in the country, defeated Middle Tennessee State's Robert Gustafsson, 7-5, 6-1, BYU's Carlos Lozano, 6-1, 4-5, 6-2, Utah's Kevin Zenger, 6-0, 6-1, and UNLV's No. 62-ranked Nenad Zivkovic, 6-2, 6-3, to complete a perfect singles weekend in the No. 1 spot. In doubles play, he and partner Adam Webster went 2-2 this past weekend in the No. 1 spot to improve to 6-2 on the year. The doubles wins included defeating Middle Tennessee State's pair 8-3 and upsetting duo Carlos Lozano and Gert Vilms of No. 23-ranked BYU, 8-4. The pair fell to duos from Utah, 8-6, and UNLV, 8-2.

Janus posted a perfect 3-0 singles record this past weekend and a 2-1 doubles record against tough Mountain West Conference competition. The 60th ranked Rebels defeated Utah, 6-1, but dropped two close matches to No. 36 BYU, 4-3, and No. 66 San Diego State, 4-3. The unranked Warsaw, Poland, native played in the No. 1 position, sweeping Utah's Irini Kotoglou, 6-2, 6-2, and upsetting BYU's No. 37-ranked Jodi Richardson 4-6, 7-6, 6-4. She also defeated San Diego State's Silva Tornier, 5-7, 6-1, 7-6. In No. 1 doubles play, the unranked duo of Janus and teammate Agniezka Abram soundly defeated Utah, 8-3, and upset No. 22-ranked Jodi Richardson and Brooke Ferney of BYU, 8-4. The duo dropped a close match to San Diego State's No. 33-ranked pair Lindsey Hedberg and Silvia Tornier, 8-6.
