Athlete of the Week
Katey Becker, So., San Diego State
San Diego State sophomore Katey Becker (Orange, Calif.) is the McLeodUSA Mountain West Conference
Women¹s Tennis Players of the Week. This is the first player of the week honor for Becker and the
second for SDSU this season.
In a busy week for the Aztec women, Becker registered a 3-1 record at No. 5 singles and went 1-0 in
doubles as she helped the team to victories over two higher-ranked opponents and a 2-2 record for
the week. SDSU upset No. 31 Ohio State, 5-3, on Tuesday, then fell to No. 6 California, 7-2, Friday.
The Aztecs claimed a 5-4 win over conference foe No. 41 BYU on Saturday, then finished the week with
a 6-3 loss to No. 42 Oregon Sunday. SDSU is now 9-7 overall and vaulted to No. 27 in the national
rankings.
Becker has won nine of her last 10 matches, seven of those in straight sets, and improved to 14-8
overall and 9-5 in duals. She started the week with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Laura Maloney from Ohio
State. She took California¹s Lisa Owierniak to 7-5 in the second set before falling 6-2, 7-5. Becker
claimed a 6-2, 6-4 conference win over BYU¹s Tara Ferguson, then rallied for a three-set (3-6, 6-2,
6-2) win over Oregon¹s Valerie Young. She teamed with Lindsey Hedberg at No. 3 doubles to claim a
crucial doubles victory over BYU¹s team of Khoudoiarova/Reynolds in that 5-4 team victory.

UNLV Host of 2000 Mtn. West Women¹s Tennis Championship
The inaugural Mountain West Conference Women¹s Tennis Championship will be hosted by UNLV in Las
Vegas, Nev. All eight Mtn. West women¹s tennis teams will compete in the single-elimination team
event for the first league title April 27-29. Seedings will be decided by regular-season dual match
results in conference matches. All requests for media credentials for the inaugural Mountain West
Conference Women¹s Tennis Championship should be submitted in writing to Director of Communications
Elaine Adams at the Mtn. West office or UNLV Media Relations contact Mark Wallington prior to the
event.
Team-By-Team Notes
Air Force posted a 2-2 record during the week, defeating Wichita State at home then going 1-2 at the
UC Irvine Invitational with losses to Santa Clara and New Mexico State and a win over Portland
State. BYU split a pair of 5-4 decisions this week, defeating Oregon and falling to San Diego State.
The No. 31-ranked Cougars will play at rival Utah on Friday. Colorado State lost three matches at
the Tulsa Invitational and will next play at Denver Saturday. Idle this past week, New Mexico is
ranked No. 38 in the nation and has faced five top-20 teams this season. Dominika Gerwin is a
perfect 8-0 at No. 4 singles in duals. The Lobos return to action Apr. 2 at New Mexico State.
Conference player of the week Katie Becker led the way as San Diego State went 2-2 against ranked
teams this past week and climbed to No. 27. The Aztecs host conference foe UNLV on Apr. 1. UNLV
split its matches during the week, defeating No. 42 Oregon (6-3), but losing to No. 34 Kansas State
(5-4). Katarina Malec, ranked No. 37 in singles, did not drop a set in singles and won both doubles
matches. She is ranked No. 34 with doubles partner Marianne Bakken. The Rebels are idle until Apr. 8
at SDSU. Utah took the week off and will next play host to conference rival BYU on Mar. 31. Wyoming
posted wins over Montana and Gonzaga this week, dropping just one singles match en route. The
Cowgirls are idle until Apr. 8.
