SDSU's Waske and Wyoming's Roberts Earn McLeodUSA Mtn. West Tennis Player of the Week Honors
March 17, 2000 Colorado Springs, Colo. SDSU Senior Alex Waske (Frankfurt, Germany) and University of Wyoming senior Melanie Roberts (St. Louis, Mo.) are this week¹s McLeodUSA Mountain West Conference Men¹s and Women¹s Tennis Players of the Week, respectively. Waske went undefeated in his three singles and doubles matches to help the Aztecs post a 2-1 team record against Toledo (7-0), Fresno State (3-4) and Texas Tech (5-2) during the week. Waske used straight sets to defeat Toledo¹s Jorge Morales (6-0, 6-4), Fresno State¹s Peter Luczak (6-2, 6-3) and Texas Tech¹s Tyan Shupe (6-0, 6-2) at No. 1 singles. In doubles competition he paired with Valentino Pest and Adam Webster to defeat the teams of Carlos Lomena/Josh Weinstein, Luczak/David Mullins, and Borut Martincivic/Joiginj Cerion, in the respective matches, all by scores of 8-5 in the No. 1 slot. Roberts had an outstanding week as team captain, leading the Cowgirls to their third victory of the season, by defeating Iowa State, 5-4. She started the dual match off on the right note by claiming a win at the No. 1 singles position in straight sets. Roberts then paired with Shirley Mendoza at the No. 1 doubles position to clinch the team victory with an 8-6 win over Noortje Cornelissen and Tara Goedjen. The Cowgirl seniors of Roberts and Mendoza had the winning combination and sealed the teams¹ fate. Wyoming improved to 3-6 in duals. Roberts is now 9-9 on the season in singles and also has nine wins in doubles. She has the second-best individual record on the team. This is the second player of the week honor for Waske, and the third selection for the SDSU men who have been playing nationally ranked teams all season, and defeated 46th ranked Texas Tech this week. This is the first player of the week honor for the Wyoming women this season and the first selection for Roberts.
