UNLV's Pavicevic and New Mexico's Gerwin Earn McLeodUSA Mtn. West Tennis Player of the Week Honors Both earn the award for the first time in their careers. (3/9)
March 9, 2000 Colorado Springs, Colo. UNLV junior Vladimir Pavicevic (Novi Saad, Serbia) and University of New Mexico senior Dominika Gerwin (Gdansk, Poland) are this week¹s McLeodUSA Mountain West Conference Men¹s and Women¹s Tennis Players of the Week, respectively. Pavicevic went 3-0 at No. 1 singles at the HEB Tennis Classic Mar. 3-5. He swept (6-1, 6-2) New Mexico¹s Matt Amgwerd, the highest-ranked player in the Mtn. West at No. 6 in the nation, to lead the Rebels to a 4-2 upset of the No. 57-ranked Lobos on Saturday. Pavicevic also claimed a 6-4, 6-0 win over Andy Posavac in the No. 1 slot, as the Rebels lost to No. 31 Washington, 4-2, on Friday. He prevailed over Minnesota¹s Harsh Mankard 6-2, 1-6, 10-6 (super tie-breaker) in the Rebels 4-1 loss to the Gophers on Sunday. His match vs. William & Mary did not finish. In doubles play, he went 1-1 with partner Danny Erez at the No. 2 position to improve to 4-3 overall as a duo. Pavicevic improved to 6-5 in singles duals and 7-11 overall this season. The No. 61 ranked UNLV men¹s team is now 4-8 on the season. Gerwin helped lead the Lobos to a 2-0 record in duals during the week. The No. 35-ranked New Mexico women¹s team improved to 10-6 on the season, defeating Idaho, 9-0 on Friday and SMU, 8-1 Sunday. Gerwin lost just six games en route to two straight-set victories. She defeated Idaho¹s Barbora Kudilkova 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 3 slot, then downed SMU¹s Lindsey Bruce 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4. Teamed with freshman Caroline Pollock in the No. 2 doubles position, the tandem defeated Idaho¹s team of Senei and Serrano, 9-7, then claimed an 8-1 win over SMU¹s team of Herring and Pruett. Gerwin remains undefeated in singles dual matches in her four-year UNM career and stands 36-0 with one match remaining (vs. UTEP on April 8). This spring she stands 13-6 in singles and is a team-best 21-9 overall for the season. Playing doubles with freshman Caroline Pollock, the duo owns a doubles record of 9-4, usually playing in the No. 2 position. This is the first player of the week honor for Pavicevic, who transferred to UNLV from South Carolina this season. It is the second selection for the UNLV men this season. This is the first player of the week honor for the New Mexico women this season and the first selection for Gerwin.
