Air Force's Mancinelli and New Mexico's Spilca Named MWC Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week Both players garner honor for the first time this season.
March 5, 2001 Colorado Springs, Colo. - Air Force Academy freshman Justin Mancinelli and University of New Mexico senior Nicoleta Spilca have been selected Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week, respectively. Both players earn MWC honors for the first time in their careers. Mancinelli, a true freshman, improved to an 11-1 singles record on the year this past weekend. He picked up three singles and four doubles victories to go undefeated last week. In the No. 5 singles position he swept opponents from Gustavus Adolphus (6-3, 6-4) and Montana (6-2, 6-1) before sweeping CU-Colorado Springs opponent in the No. 4 slot, 6-2, 6-2. In doubles play, the Oklahoma City, Okla., native teamed with Eric Pittman to beat duos from Centenary (8-3), Gustavus Adolphus (8-4) and Montana (8-3) in the No. 2 position before capping off the weekend with a 9-8 victory over the CU-Colorado Springs duo in the No. 1 spot. The Falcons went 3-1 last weekend earning a victory over Centenary, 7-0, and a 4-3 loss to Gustavus Adolphus March 2. The next day the Falcons earned wins over Montana, 7-0, and CU-Colorado Springs, 6-1.
Spilca won the deciding match at the No. 6 position in the Lobos 4-3 upset of No. 18 UCLA March 2. After winning the first game 7-5 and losing the second game 2-6, she dominated Bruin Jennifer Donahue in the third game 6-1. Against No. 60 UC Irvine, the Belen, N.M., native swept Irvine's Antonella Castro, 6-4, 6-4, in the No. 6 slot to aid the No. 50 Lobos in a 5-2 victory over the Anteaters March 4.
