COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - University of Utah junior Nicholas Yip and senior Heidi Thomas have been selected Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week, respectively. Both players earn MWC honors for the first time in their careers.

Yip, of Nanose Bay, B.C., Canada, was undefeated in the No. 3 spot in singles play and 2-1 in the No. 1 position in doubles play last weekend. Yip defeated Weber State's Philip Ivanov in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, only giving up one point in the Feb. 21 match. Against Idaho Feb. 23, Yip swept Stephen De Silva, 6-3, 6-1. Against No. 44 Boise State Feb. 24, he defeated No. 95-ranked singles player Mark Roberts 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, to clinch the victory for Utah, 4-3. Doubling with partner Kevin Zenger, the duo defeated teams from Weber State (8-5) and Idaho (8-6) before falling to the duo from Boise State 6-8. Utah went undefeated for the week, shutting out Weber State, 7-0, and defeating Idaho, 6-1, and Boise State, 4-3. Yip is 9-5 in singles and 11-4 in doubles play this season.

Thomas was instrumental in snapping Utah's six match losing streak this past week. The Utes played three nationally ranked schools with Thomas losing only one match in doubles. The Fruit Heights, Utah, native saw a loss against Washington State at No. 2 in doubles play 9-8, Feb. 23. She would not lose again, retiring Washington's Colleen Gray at No. 5 (2-6, 7-6 (6)) and sweeping UC Irvine's Mindy Gondrez in the No. 6 position 6-2, 6-0. Doubled with teammate Frida Kareld, the Utes defeated duos from Washington 9-8 and UC Irvine 8-2. The Utes fell to No. 54 Washington State, 0-6, and No. 17 Washington, 2-5, Feb. 25 before defeating No. 58 UC Irvine, 5-2, on Feb. 26.
