MWC Weekly Tennis Awards TCU's Radu Barbu and New Mexico's Iva Gersic net honors
Feb. 24, 2006 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - TCU's Radu Barbu and New Mexico's Iva Gersic have been named the Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week, respectively. A junior from Pitesti, Romania, Barbu went 2-0 in singles play and 2-0 in doubles competition last week as the 32nd-ranked Horned Frogs posted wins over No. 23 Texas Tech and No. 30 San Diego. Barbu teamed with Cosmin Cotet for a pair of doubles victories at the No. 3 spot. He also won both singles matches at the No. 5 position, defeating Teddy DiBlasi of Texas Tech (6-2, 6-2) and Ryo Sekiguchi of San Diego (6-2, 6-4). Barbu is currently 3-0 in singles matches and 4-0 in doubles competition this season.
A junior from Koprivnica, Croatia, Gersic helped the 38th-ranked Lobos to a pair of victories last week. At No. 1 singles, she defeated New Mexico State's Edine van Beusekom (6-2, 6-2) and Oklahoma State's Iryna Tkachenko (6-3, 5-7, 6-4). In No. 1 doubles play, she teamed with Maja Kovacek to defeat both Oklahoma State (8-3) and New Mexico State (8-4). The duo of Gersic and Kovacek is ranked No. 3 nationally in doubles.
