Athlete of the Week:
Whitney Wells, Jr., SDSU
San Diego State earned both of this week¹s Mountain West Conference Men¹s and Women¹s Tennis Player
of the Week awards. Whitney Wells (Jr., Fresno, Calif.) received the women¹s honor after she claimed
wins at No. 1 singles and doubles in both of SDSU¹s victories during the week. Alex Waske (Sr.,
Frankfurt, Germany) earned the men¹s honor by posting a win in both singles and doubles in his first
action of the season.
In leading the women¹s team to a pair of 8-1 victories over Loyola Marymount and Long Beach State,
Wells won both of her No. 1 singles matches in straight sets. She defeated Edit Pakay of LMU, 6-4,
7-5 on Feb. 18, then downed LBSU¹s Mandy Carvalho, 6-3, 6-4 the following day. In doubles action,
Wells paired with Laura Aguero for two wins in the No. 1 position. The duo defeated LMU¹s team of
Pakay and Penka Fileva, 8-2 then claimed a tie-break win over Carvalho and Sophie Han, 9-8. The SDSU
women¹s team improved to 3-1 on the season, while Wells also climbed to 3-1 overall in singles and
stands 2-0 in doubles with Aguero.

UNLV Host of 2000 Mtn. West Women¹s Tennis Championship
The inaugural Mountain West Conference Women¹s Tennis Championship will be hosted by UNLV in Las
Vegas, Nev. All eight Mtn. West women¹s tennis teams will compete in the single-elimination team
event for the first league title April 27-29. Seedings will be decided by regular-season dual match
results in conference matches.
All requests for media credentials for the inaugural Mountain West Conference Women¹s Tennis
Championship should be submitted in writing to Director of Communications Elaine Adams at the Mtn.
West office or UNLV Media Relations contact Mark Wallington prior to the event.
Team-by-Team Notes
Off to its best start (8-1) since joining the Division I ranks, Air Force suffered its first loss at
No. 38 Univ. of San Diego on Feb. 18. Julie Weiss (No. 3) and Kelli O¹Bryant (No. 6) posted singles
wins and combined for a victory at No. 2 doubles. The Falcons regrouped to sweep Point Loma, 9-0,
claiming every match in straight sets. This week, AFA plays host to Northen Iowa on Friday. Playing
in the New Mexico State Invitational, Colorado State posted a 2-1 record this past week. Amanda
Bartz claimed her first two wins at the No. 1 position and improved to 4-1 in dual matches. The Rams
are idle this week. Competing at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Madison, Wisc.,
for the first time in school history, No. 36 New Mexico went 1-2 against ranked opponents. The Lobos
victory came against host Wisconsin on the Badgers home courts. This Sunday UNM will host Boise
State. San Diego State claimed two home wins this week, defeating Loyola Marymount and Long Beach
State by identical 8-1 scores. Conference player of the week Whitney Wells (No. 1) was one of four
Aztecs to win both singles matches and Wells also claimed both doubles wins. The Aztecs play host to
No. 7 Southern California Saturday, then travel to No. 6 Pepperdine Tuesday. Wyoming lost two
matches in Lincoln, Neb., falling to Bowling Green (7-2) and Nebraska (9-0). The Cowgirls play
Northern Iowa at Air Force Saturday. BYU, UNLV and Utah were all idle this past week. BYU returns to
action hosting SMU on Friday. Making a trip to Northern California, UNLV plays at No. 25 Fresno
State Wednesday, San Jose State Thursday and No. 1 Stanford Friday. Utah¹s next action is Saturday
when it hosts SMU, then Tuesday when Weber State pays a visit.
