Feb. 9, 2001
Colorado Springs, Colo. - San Diego State sophomore Valentino Pest and Colorado State junior Amanda Bartz have been selected Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week, respectively. Pest was one of the two tennis players from the Mountain West Conference at the prestigious Rolex ITA Indoor Championships in Dallas, Texas, Feb. 1-4. The invitation only tournament featured the top ranked singles players in the country, including all from the top eight. The unranked Pest swept two nationally ranked players before falling in three games to No. 11 Ramsey Smith of Duke, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, in the quarterfinals. After his strong showing in Dallas, the Munich, Germany, native boarded a plane to join his team as they took on No. 28 Washington and No. 40 Tulsa. Though he lost his singles matches in the No. 1 slot against both schools, he won both his doubles matches with teammates Travis Hasson against Washington in the No. 1 spot and Matt Bere in the No. 2 spot against Tulsa. This is a first time Player of the Week honor for Pest.
Bartz won all of her singles matches as the Rams took on No. 57 Nebraska, Creighton and Wichita State. Against Nebraska Feb. 2, Bartz contributed a singles point in the No. 3 position as the Rams fell 2-5. The next day against Creighton, Bartz swept in the No. 3 spot, 6-2, 6-1, and won in doubles play 8-0 with teammate Allison Lisle in the No. 1 position to give the Rams a 5-2 victory. The weekend concluded against Wichita State as Bartz swept Kellie Clark, 6-4, 6-2, in the No. 3 position. The Colorado Springs, Colo., native is also a first time Player of the Week recipient.
