San Diego State's Maiberger and BYU's Richardson Named Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week Richardson had a perfect week as the Cougars swept conference rival Colorado State and knocked off two nationally ranked schools.

Colorado Springs, Colo. - San Diego State sophomore Oliver Maiberger and BYU senior Jodi Richardson have been selected Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week, respectively. Maiberger swept both opponents in singles play this past weekend. Against No. 51 New Mexico State Jan. 27, Maiberger defeated Alvaro Dominguez in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 2 slot. The next day against Nevada, the Lorsch, Germany, native once again demonstrated his nationally ranked singles power by defeating Tomas Hamrik in the No. 1 position in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. To date, Maiberger has won every singles regular season dual match since his collegiate career began last spring. In No. 1 doubles play against Nevada, Maiberger and partner Travis Hasson knocked off the Wolf Pack in the No. 1 position to win the match 8-4, sealing a 7-0 victory for the Aztecs who are currently No. 35 in the nation. This time last year, Maiberger kicked off the spring tennis season by being named the first men's MWC Player of the Week for the 2000 season.
Richardson had a perfect week as the Cougars swept conference rival Colorado State 7-0 and knocked off two nationally ranked schools. Richardson won all the singles and doubles matches she played in this past week in straight sets. In the No. 1 slot on January 26, Richardson defeated Colorado State's Amanda Bartz, 6-0, 6-1. The next day she beat Erika Quebe of No. 56-ranked Purdue in the No. 1 slot, 6-2, 6-1. Her biggest singles match triumph of the week came Jan. 29 against No. 7 ranked singles player Julie DeRoo of No. 19 Mississippi. The No. 53-ranked Richardson swept the match 6-2, 6-4. In doubles play, Richardson and partner Brooke Ferney went 3-0 in the No. 1 spot. The pair are ranked No. 26 in the nation. This is the first time the Canberra, ACT, Australia, native has earned Mountain West Conference player of the week honors.
