Ellison sisters win twice on second day of tournament

The Aztecs completed day two of the Wilson/ITA Southwest Regionals on Friday.

The San Diego State women's tennis team continued doubles and singles action at the Wilson/ITA Southwest Regional Championships on Friday at Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.

In the double draw, the duo of Julia Trunk and Julia Wais was ousted after dropping an 8-5 decision to San Diego's Maria Raygada and Juliette Coupez. In the consolation bracket, however, SDSU went 1-1 as Sierra and Roxanne Ellison beat Pepperdine's Tara Panu and Tania Rice by a score of 8-2, while Olivia Colman and Naseem Eslami fell to their UCLA counterparts in a tight 9-8(6) match.

Following doubles, two rounds of singles took place and 16th-seeded Julia Trunk advanced as a result of her 7-5, 6-2 win over Natalia Lozano of UC Santa Barbara. In the same round, Eslami was not as fortunate after falling, 6-0, 6-4, to 11th-seeded Sarah Landsman of Arizona.

In the round of 16 a few hours later, Trunk took to the court and found herself in a tough three-set match with seventh-seeded Alison Ramos of USC. The junior won the first set, 6-4, but then fell in next two, 5-7, 4-6, as she was eliminated from the tournament.

In the second round of the consolation bracket, Roxanne Ellison emerged victorious over Julie Luzar of Long Beach State as she moved on after posting a 4-6, 7-6(7), 6-3 victory. Later in the third round, she was blanked, 6-0, 6-0, by 49er Jaklin Alawi to effectively end her run at the event.

Colman, Sierra Ellison and Julia Wais, however, found success in the third round. Colman was a 6-0, 6-2 winner over Malorie De la Cruz of Cal State Fullerton, while Ellison defeated Arizona's Deborah Castany, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2. Wais, meanwhile, recorded a 7-5, 6-0 win over Whitney Paluch of Cal State Northridge.

Day three of the Wilson/ITA Southwest Regionals continues Saturday.
