Trunk Leads Aztecs on First Day of ITA Southwest Regionals Trunk posts victories in doubles and singles

San Diego State junior Julia Trunk posted wins in doubles and singles on day one of the ITA Southwest Regional Championships at Barnes Tennis Center. In the round of 32, Trunk and freshman Julia Wais teamed up to defeat UC Santa Barbara's Michelle Murphy and Sofia Novak, 8-5, to move on in the bracket. Sierra and Roxanne Ellison, along with Olivia Colman and Naseem Eslami, however, did not experience the same success as both teams dropped their matches and will compete in the consolation draw beginning on Friday. After the doubles session, singles action took center stage and Colman cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Arizona's Claire Rietsch in the round of 128. The junior joined her six other Aztec teammates in the round of 64 after they all received round-of-128 byes. Trunk, the 16th-seeded singles player, advanced to the round of 32 after she posted a 6-0, 7-5 win over Roxanne Plata of UC Riverside. Eslami was also victorious in her match with Hawai'i's Mari Tadaki as she made quick work in a 6-1, 6-0 triumph. Colman, Wais and Sierra Ellison each fell in straight sets to their seeded counterparts and will compete in the consolation bracket along with Roxanne Ellison and Emma Cioffi.
Day two of the regional event is slated for Friday at 9 a.m. beginning with doubles. ITA Southwest Regional Championships
