New Mexico and Colorado State Win

Lobos will play for title Saturday.

SAN DIEGO - Top-seeded New Mexico swept fourth-seeded San Diego State, 4-0, while Colorado State defeated the No. 8 seed Falcons from Air Force in the afternoon session of the semifinal round of the 2004 Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Championship Friday at Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.

The Lobos' Maja Kovacek and Sandy Lukowski (No. 23 ranked duo in the nation) teamed up to beat SDSU's No. 47 tandem of Indra Erichsen and Katalina Romero, 8-6, at number one doubles to clinch the first point for New Mexico. Lukowski also won her singles match in straight sets at the No. 5 over Patricia Graf. The other UNM singles wins came from Michelle Heidbrink and Tjasa Suvak at the four and six positions, respectively. Heidbrink defeated Alesya Vidov, 6-4, 6-2, while Suvak beat Sarah Sansom, 6-3, 6-1.

The Falcons took the early 1-0 advantage by winning the doubles point. With the doubles matches knotted at one apiece, Air Force's number one duo of Laura Nigro and Gina Black beat CSU's Dasha Zhurin and Emily Kirchem, 8-6. Charity Malone got the Rams rolling in singles play as she downed Black, 6-3, 6-0, at the number four spot, tying the score at one. CSU's Carla Pallares and Jessica Jones brought home the next two singles wins for the Rams at the four and six positions, respectively. Tatyana Ugorich secured the Colorado State victory with her straight set (6-2, 6-4) win over the Falcons' Katie Tomkie at the No. 5.

The Lobos (20-3) will face second-seeded BYU for the MWC Women's tournament title at Noon on Saturday, while Colorado State (12-12) will play Utah for fifth-place at 9 a.m. on Saturday at the Barnes Center.
