BYU and Utah Win Cougars will play for title Saturday.

SAN DIEGO - Second-seeded and 22nd-ranked BYU advanced to its second consecutive championship match with a 4-0 win over third-seeded UNLV in the morning session of the semifinal round of the 2004 Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Championship Friday morning at Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego. In the other morning match, seventh-seeded Utah upset the sixth-seeded Cowgirls of Wyoming in the consolation bracket, 4-2. The Cougars jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point. BYU's Barbora Zahnova and Sofia Holden beat Agnieszka Abram and Anne Claire Ortiz-Luis at the No. 1 position while Olga Boulytcheva and Lu Oswald ran through Cindy Treber and Mery Constanti, 8-1, at No. 3. The Cougars went on to win straight-set matches at the number one, five and six positions in singles play to finalize the sweep. The duo of Cinthia Saucedo and Jessica Watts secured the doubles point for Utah with their 8-6 victory over Patricia Chien and Karolina Rowinski at No. 3 doubles. Sheri Esrock and Whitney Eber were also victorious at the top doubles spot for the Utes. Watts went on the give Utah a 2-0 lead after defeating Wyoming's Amy Senko in straight sets (6-1, 6-2) at the number five singles position. Yuliani Santi's 6-3, 6-0 win over Whitney Eber at the No. 2 put the Cowgirl's on the board for the first time. Utah and Wyoming split the next two matches with Sheri Esrock (Utah) beating the Cowgirl's Patricia Chien, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, at the number one and Karolina Rowinski (Wyoming) defeating Utah's Rachel Alder at the four, 7-5, 6-2. Jenessa Jackson gave the Utes the victory with her three-set triumph (1-6, 6-3, 6-3) over Andrea House at the number six singles spot.
BYU improves to 23-5 on the season and will face the winner of top-seeded New Mexico and fourth-seeded San Diego State for the MWC Women's tournament title at Noon on Saturday, while the Utes (8-17) will take on the winner of the fifth-seeded Colorado State/eighth-seeded Air Force match for fifth-place at 9 a.m. on Saturday at the Barnes Center.
